The Pitch

What does the piece wish us to believe? Look for language that reveals the position(s) the piece seems interested in having the audience adopt.

The Complaint

What is the piece is reacting to or worried about? Look for language that reveals the author’s starting point. Sometimes the complaint is very obvious!

The Moment

The particular moment in time in which the piece is produced.

The moment refers to the moment in which the piece was made possible, explained by the term “kairos” in classical rhetoric, meaning “the right time:” the historical/cultural/social context in which the text is made possible.

The Audience

Implicitly, when we look for the pitch, complaint and moment of a text, we are acknowledging that it was written for an audience.

It is important to make audience a priority in our writing, therefore, analyzing a text for its intended audience is a useful exercise.
