Assignment Description

Students will research TWO ARTWORKS From sources chosen by the instructor to prepare and write a two-page paper. The assignment is to choose TWO ARTWORKS to write a compare and contrast paper. Five shared questions are provided for consideration while conducting research and writing the paper.

Students are expected to include proper usage of terms relative to the visual elements and principles of design. Through the writing process, they will analyze and discuss the artist’s cultural and historical backgrounds and draw conclusions as to their influence from research. In addition, they will consider any perceived similarities and reflect on what they think the artist was trying to communicate. After completing their paper, they will submit in D2L through the designated Shared Assignment aligned with the prescribed General Education Outcomes.

USING TWO ARTWORKS prepare and write a two-page, typed paper. The assignment is to choose TWO ARTWORKS from two different cultures and two different time periods to write a compare and contrast paper. Five questions (below) are provided and must be addressed, while conducting research and writing the paper.

1. Analyze and discuss the different ways the artists have used the visual elements such as color, contrast, balance – etc.

2. How do you think the cultural and historical background of the artists might have influenced the way their work looks?

3. What conclusions can you reach about the artist’s time period and his or her views of their world? Some things you might want to consider: spirituality, politics, economics, race or ethnicity, gender or gender identity, ecological issues, materials and process.

4. Do the two works share any similar ideas, approaches to subject or use of materials?

5. What do you think the artists are trying to communicate in their work?

Proper usage of terms relative to the visual elements and principles of design is expected. The two-page compare and contrast paper should be typed with proper formatting, befitting a college paper.

All students must submit this document individually within the D2L site for the course.

Criterion Design (How does the assignment ask students to perform in the manner expected by the criterion?)

Explanation of Issues

Students will research TWO ARTWORKS from sources chosen by the instructor to prepare and write a two-page compare and contrast paper. Five shared questions are provided for consideration while conducting research and writing the paper. Students are expected to include proper usage of terms relative to the visual elements and principles of design.

Evidence Students Analyze both works of art formally through identifying both the Elements and Principles of design (Line, shape, color, contrast, perspective, rhythm, pattern, balance, etc.) as well as off the basis of their research, develop their own conclusions on what the artist is trying to communicate visually.

Influence of Context and Assumptions

Through visual analysis and research, the students are to evaluate historical and culture influences that may have affected the final look of the artwork. Students are also asked to consider the time in which the work was created and whether or not spirituality, politics, economics, race or ethnicity, gender or gender identity, ecological issues, materials and process had an influence on the overall look of the final artworks.

Student’s Position Though the students’ research of historical, cultural, and time period the work was created, the student is to then conclude their own thoughts on how the work was influenced.

Conclusions and Related Outcomes

The student will develop their own conclusions on what that artist is trying to communicate to the viewer (the student) based off the above previously stated research and formal analysis.

Cultural Diversity Students will research TWO ARTWORKS from differing cultures and Time periods.

Knowledge of Cultural Worldview Frameworks

Through researching the background of the artist’s culture and the time in which the artwork was created and comparing that information with another artist’s background and culture, successful students will demonstrate a partial understanding of the complexity of global perspectives.

Empathy (Skills) The students’ research on each individual artist and the culture and time in which the artwork was created, a successful student will uncover their own view on the how the work was influenced.

Openness (Attitudes)

Students who research the background and influences of the differing artists will develop a better understanding of intercultural competence. Through this process, the student will have a higher level of understanding of how cultures differ and therefore affect the outcome of the ‘look’ of the work.

Global Self- Awareness

Students who research the background and influences of the differing artists will develop a better understanding of intercultural competence. Through this process, the student will have a higher level of understanding of how cultures differ and therefore affect the outcome of the ‘look’ of the work.
