Lesson Planning Module 4

Connection to Theory

Developed by Dr. Melissa M Jozwiak

What to Expect from the training modules

Each training module will focus on a specific area of the lesson plan.

It will include an overview of what is expected in that section of the lesson plan.

It will offer suggestions or common mistakes students make.

It will review the grading criteria needed for a perfect score.

Lastly you will be quizzed on the information included in the modules.

Connection to Theory

To explain why the lesson is developmentally appropriate:

Use the principles of DAP and

make a connection to learning theory.

Include individual

and cultural considerations that show the lesson is appropriate.

Connection to Theory

Explain why the lesson is rooted in theory and developmentally appropriate. Use the principles of DAP and theorists discussed in reading to describe how the activity is individually, social, culturally and linguistically appropriate for the students in the class.

Identify a theorist (e.g. Erikson, Piaget, Bandura, Vygotsky, Kohlberg, Gilligan, Marcia, and Gardner) whose work/concepts can be used as a basis for this lesson. Explain how you see this theory in the classroom during your lesson.

Identify which DAP Principle is reflected in this lesson (write out the principle) and explain why.

Describe how this lesson is appropriate for one student from #4 based on their individual characteristics (e.g. interests, abilities, needs).

Describe how this lesson is appropriate for two student from #4 when considering their cultural contexts (e.g. is what you are asking them to do culturally appropriate within their home, classroom community, local community or religious life) OR How this lesson reflects teaching anti-bias curriculum * 3349 only

Example of Connection to Theory

Most children at this grade level are in Piaget’s preoperational stage and have an improving ability to use symbols and language. This will be important in the delivery of this lesson.

This aligns with DAP principle 6 which states that development proceeds toward greater complexity, self-regulation, and symbolic or representational capacities. This lesson will expand the concept of rhyming that concepts most kindergarteners have already been introduced to. It will add to the complexity of the concept of rhyme by segmenting the words into onset / rhyme.

The lesson is individually appropriate because I am selecting objects that are related to things the children are really interested in (e.g. cars and dinosaurs) and will use English and Spanish words for objects.

The lesson is culturally appropriate because I have selected everyday objects commonly seen in their homes. Additionally, if students prefer to use a card over the physical object, I have included picture cards from “Loteria” a common game played by children from Mexico so they can rhyme in English and Spanish.

Hints, Common Mistakes and Cautions

The most common mistake in this section is a student forgetting to include one of the required components.

Connection to Theory (NAEYC 1a-c) A strong connection is made to child development (Developmentally Appropriate Practice Principles) and theory and/or theorists. The lesson is theoretically sound. An explanation of why the lesson is developmentally appropriate for these students is provided. Include the following: DAP Principle Theory (i.e. learning theory) with citation Explanation of individual appropriateness *EDEC 3349 only Explanation of cultural relevance * EDEC3349 only The lesson is generally connected to child development theory and/or theorists. A simple of explanation of the appropriateness of the lesson is provided. Little connection is made to development theory and/or theorists. The lesson is missing a clear theoretical basis. No connection to theory is made.

Ready to take the quiz…

Be sure to take the quiz on Module 1.

The quiz will include multiple choice, true/false or matching questions.

You will be asked to apply what you learned in this module and decide which example is best or score the example using the scoring rubric
