1. All societies exhibit inequalities in the distribution of scarce and valuable resources.

2. Such inequality results in the development of different groups with different interests.

3. Power is at the core of all human social relationships.

4. Each of these different groups will exercise as much power as it can.

5. Some of these different groups have more power than other groups.

6. Society is dominated by a few very powerful groups.

7. Parts of a society (e.g., norms, values, laws, etc.) serve the interests of these powerful groups.

8. Society is held together by powerful groups who use whatever means necessary to maintain power.

THERE ARE TWO TRADITIONS IN CONFLICT THEORY

I. ANALYTICAL CONFLICT THEORY

A. Conflict is a natural and inevitable part of society.

B. We must study society as it is.

C. Sociology can be value free.

D. We can be objective in our research.

E. Our goal is to analyze, explain, understand society.

II. CRITICAL CONFLICT THEORY

A. Sociologists have a moral obligation to critique society.

B. It is possible, in principle, for a society to have no conflict or power inequalities.

C. Sociology can not and should not be value free.

D. We should not be objective in our research topics.

E. Our goal is to change society.
