Concept Analysis Paper Guidelines & Grading Rubric

(40% of course grade)

Purpose:

The purpose of the concept analysis paper is for you to select a CONCEPT and present a

concept exploration using Walker and Avant’s model of concept analysis – 8 steps (Walker &

Avant, 2018). You should take a careful look at a concept important to your research interests.

Defining the concept and exploring how the concept might be used are essential for advancing

nursing research. Concepts used to advance nursing science or develop theories must have a

shared common meaning within the discipline (nursing), and with other disciplines.

Guidelines:

• Resource: (1) Textbook Strategies for theory construction in nursing (Walker & Avant,

2018; Chapter 10)

(2) Bargagliotti, L. A. (2012). Work engagement in nursing: A concept analysis. Journal

of Advanced Nursing, 68(6), 1414–1428.

• Choose a CONCEPT that you find useful to your current or future research

• The paper should be an in-depth exploration of this concept, and should include review of

the nursing and the interdisciplinary literature on the topic

• Your concept analysis paper must include:

(1) Introduction

(2) Background

(3) Purpose

(4) Method and Data Sources

(5) Results (Identify all uses of the concept; Defining attributes; Identify a model case;

Identify contrary, borderline, and related cases; Identify antecedents and

consequences; Define empirical referents)

2

(6) Discussion (Strengths; Limitations; Discuss what work has been done and what work

needs to be done to study this concept)

(7) Conclusion

(8) References: You must include all of the resources cited in your paper. There must be

at least 20 scholarly/scientific resources listed. Websites cited should also be

evidence-based/scientific.

• Concept analysis papers are expected to be 12-15 pages in length and never more

than 20 pages (not including title page, tables, figures, references, and appendix)

• APA format must be adhered to

• A point penalty of 5 points will occur if late.
