Concept Analysis Definition

A concept analysis, basically, is a deep examination of a phenomenon of interest – a deep dive, if you will. Other terms that convey a similar meaning include concept clarification or creating conceptual meaning (Chinn & Kramer, 1991)

z

Empirically is define as means of observation or experience rather than theory or pure logic.

Concept Analysis 101

Walker & Avant (2011)

Concepts are the blocks of nursing theory construction

Are made up of attributes that make them unique from other concepts

Examining the structure and function of a concept is the purpose of concept analysis

Introduction

Introduce the topic while indicating its inherent importance or interest.

Indicate the methodology and/or the structure of the with major sections.

State a thesis statement in a single sentence

Definition and Uses of the Concept

z

According to the Walker and Avant’s method, when defining a concept, it is important to identify as many uses of the concept as possible to achieve a complete understanding of its extents or limitations.

The sources used to retrieve information about

CINAHL, Medline, Ovid; 2) dictionaries; 3) books; and 4) journals that have articles related to the concept

z

Identify defining attributes

Attributes are clusters of characteristics that are most frequently closely linked to the concept (Walker and Avant, 2013).

Example:

Using terms common to nursing, three defining attributes were identified: assessment, evaluation, and open-mind (Perez, Cainelle, 2015)

(Walker and Avant, 2013)

z

Antecedents

Antecedents are actions that must be present before critical thinking in nursing can occur

Three antecedents have been identified in the literature:

problem, questioning attitude, and the need for answers

Walker & Avant, 2013

z

Consequences (outcomes)

z

Walker & Avant describe the consequences as events or incidents that occur as a result of a concept.

Two consequences of critical thinking have been identified:

safer practice and confidence in nurse’s decision making

Model Case

A model case is an example of the use of the concept that demonstrates all the defining attributes of the concept

z

Borderline Case

Borderline cases are examples that contain most of the defining attributes of the concept, but not all of them. Related cases do not include all attributes and they are similar to the case model but are not them.

z

Contrary Case

Contrary cases are clear instances of a case that is “not the concept

z

Empirical Referents

Walker and Avant, describe empirical referents as classes or categories of actual phenomena that demonstrate the occurrence of the concept itself.

Kilpatrick, 2011; Pearson, 2012
