Identification of concept

Concept analysis is an instrumental process of refining concepts that are being studied and allowing for the professional practice and the science to be improved or developed. Concept analysis as per Schmidt and McArthur (2018) is instrumental for the process of generation of new ideas. One of the fundamental concepts in nursing that are focused on when providing care is patient safety. The understanding of how to improve on the safety of patients and ensuring that there is the assurance of the best quality of services. The concept of patient safety helps in the advancement of the decisions that are expected to be made in the health setting and will allow for the identification of the necessary actions that nurses are supposed to take. This paper aims to assess the concept of patient safety with the use of Penrod and Hupcey’s principles.

Description of concept by review of relevant, scholarly literature

Allen‐Duck, Robinson, and Stewart (2017) opine that the concept of patient safety is may be affected by the lack of effective measures put in place of the lack of skills and knowledge among the healthcare provides. The safety of patients may be compromised if there are issues of medical errors, the occurrence of adverse effects, and injury of patients. Nurses are therefore mandated to ensure that there is the prevention of such occurrences for the attainment of safety for patients.

The understanding of the concept of patient safety will be instrumental in the determination of the basis that nurses could use in the process of identification of the right strategies of change. As such, the use of theories allows nurses to make the right decisions and with the understanding of how to improve on the safety of patients, there is an assurance of a quality kind of care.

The attributes that define the concept of patient safety include the process of prevention of medical errors and any adverse events occurring in the health setting. The other attribute that helps in the definition of patient safety is the process of protecting patients from exposure to any harm or the exposure of the patient to any injuries. This is expected to be attainable if there is effective collaboration among the healthcare providers in the process of delivery of care to the patients.

Analysis of concept utilizing Penrod and Hupcey’s principles

  Epistemological principle

There is enough information on the concept of the safety of patients in that the issue may arise if there is a lack of effective protection and handling of the needs of patients. The concept of patient safety is fundamental in that it ensures that one can be able to learn how to improve on the quality of development of patient care services and that ensures that nurses have an understanding of their role in the delivery of care.

The prioritization of the safety of patients as per epistemological principle is expected to take precedence over the actions that are done by nurses. Along these lines, there is a need for nurses to be informed of the importance of patient safety at all times. In the process of determination of the need for change in the health setting, there is a need of ensuring that the safety of patients is assured. There should be no compromise on the safety of the patients at any given time when providing patient care services.

Nurses are supposed to understand the nature of the safety of patients as it ensures that there will be ease in the identification of patient care services. The efforts that are taken into account as well allow for the identification of the origin of care. The limitations that may be faced as well in the health setting may influence the process of care but should not be compromised about the issue of limited aspects of care. The limitation of human knowledge may influence the quality of care for patients as there is an ease in the determination of the theories that are necessary for handling the patient's needs.

  Pragmatic principle

The concept of patient safety is managed with the use of actionable knowledge. This implies that the understanding of the various aspect of change that is put into consideration are expected to help in the determination of ways to improve one's knowledge. There is a need for emphasis to be put on the actions that are evident about the management of issues of safety of patients as posited by Kadhim (2017).

The concept of patient safety is supposed to be assured if there is an understanding of the need for the safety of patients as it helps in the determination of the experience that one has. The process of the safety of patients as well is expected to be provided in line with the assurance of the standard of care for patients. There is as well a need for ensuring that there is an understanding of the aspect of knowing and that aspect of actions on the necessary intelligence that ensure that one can improve on the standard of health of patients.

The other basis that is taken into consideration in the principle of pragmatic inquiry is to ensure that there is the experiential process taken into account. The safety of patients may be assured if there is a commitment among nurses to making any inquiries for aspects that are not understood. The safety concept is affected by various factors one of which is the experience of the healthcare providers. This as well entails the process that has been taken into consideration when handling the various inquiries.

  Linguistic principle

The issue of the safety of the patient is attributed to the process of communication among healthcare providers. The cases of lack of communication will put the patient at risk and could result in the deterioration in the quality of care. The process of communication among the healthcare providers is expected to help in the identification of the decision-making activities that ensure that one can eliminate any risks of poor patient care services.

The other aspect of communication that is supposed to be taken into account is the need for improvement in listening. This is because with the process of listening one can be in a position to learn how to be able to eliminate any risks of poor patient care services. The listening process will allow nurses to learn of the needs of patients and ensure ensuring that the process of care is provided in line with the patient's needs. This as well ensures that there is an avoidance of any risks of lack of safety measures among patients.

  Logical principle

The prevention of issues of poor care and the improvement of the safety of patients is supposed to be a logical process. This is because in the process of delivery of patient care services one is supposed to be informed of the challenges that may be faced at the time of provision of care. The logical process of delivery of care ensures that there is the delivery of the right quality of care at the right place.

The logical principle as well is fundamental in the process of ranking the process of delivery of care. As such, nurses can make use of the logical principle in the determination of the things that are of importance that the moment. This is an important step as well in allowing the patients to be in a position to get the right quality of care. This is vital in that one can be able to eliminate any risks of poor patient care. This allows for the need for handling the cases of needs of patients depending on priority and ensuring that any errors are avoided.

Supportive evidence and examples

Lin, Lin, and Lou (2017) opine that the concept of patient safety is vital in that the reasons for patients to seek medical care is for them to get better and the safety of their care is paramount to ensure that the patients get better. The issues that may be experienced in the health setting may impact the decision-making on the process of delivery of safe care. However, the provision of the correct quality of health of patients may help in ensuring that the care for patients is assured.

The study by Higgins, Larson, and Schnall (2017) agrees that the issue of the safety of patients will be impacted by the experience that the healthcare providers have. This is because the decisions that are to be made by the healthcare providers will allow for the decision-making process on the necessary quality of care for patients. This is an implication that the issues of poor patient care may be avoided if there is a clear set up of measures to improve the standard of health of patients.

The study by Kadhim (2017) found that the process of care for patients is based on the policies that are provided in the healthcare organization. This is because the policies that are provided in an organization are supposed to be useful in the process of delivery of better healthcare services. This implies that with the provision of effective health for patients one can be able to handle the various needs of patients.

The instances of unreliable health of patients are supposed to be handled by ensuring that a better standard of care is provided. In the study by Nilsson, From, and Lindwall (2019) there is a clear assessment of the role that the leaders play in the enhancement of the safety of patients. It is found that the commitment of the leaders to create an environment that is conducive and provides the correct leaders will influence the standard of patient care. Along these lines, there will be an influence on the safety of patients.

Analysis and discussion of the conclusions reached

The issues of concern that may affect the safety of patients include the planning process, the practice experience, and the commitment of the nurses to focus on the needs of patients. The process of planning will ensure that there is a clear set up of the factors that impact the safety and that there is ease in the identification of the risks of care and developing the necessary measures to eliminate the risks of occurrence of mistakes in the process of delivery of care.

The other finding that is seen in the case of the use of different principles to define and handle the issue of the safety of patients is the aspect of commitment. Regardless of the lack of a reliable understanding of the need for better patient care. The cases of lack of an understanding of the risks that are faced may not result in any positive action.

The strategies that are put in place in the health setting are supposed to help in the identification of the risks that the patients are facing and point out the possible strategies to manage such issues of concern. This is an implication that nurses are expected to be informed of the steps that are taken in delivering care. Nursing practice is supposed to be informed and carried out with the use of specific procedural means.

The issue of communication as well is found to influence the concept of patient safety. This is because with the delivery of the correct safety measures one can be able to improve on the standard of living. There is a need for ensuring that one has an understanding of the various aspects of care. There is a need as well for allowing for the patients to be able to learn how to advance on the standard of care.

Interrelatedness to Nursing

  Fit within nursing knowledge

The safety of patients is supposed to be part of the activities that nurses focus on in the process of delivery of care. This is because nurses are supposed to help in the identification of the health issues faced by patients, develop a plan of care, and ensure that there is an identification of the best quality of healthcare services. This is an important step because in the process of provision of patient care services there will be an ease in the improvement of the quality of care.

Nurses are supposed to embrace knowledge progressively and should not be rigid to changes. The efforts to ensure that there is an advancement of the safety of patients there will be an elimination of any risks of poor patient care. This is an important step as well because as much as there is a lack of a reliable direction of care to guide the patient needs one can be able to advance on the standard of health of patients.

The experiences that are gained by nurses should be useful in the creation of any new knowledge on the process of advancing the safety of patients. This is because in the process of delivery of care the patients can gain confidence in the healthcare providers. This is as well an important step because there will be ease in the advancement of the standard of living of patients (McEwen & Willis, 2019). This as well allows for the determination of measures to improve the living standard of patients.

The support on the process of care for patients as well is supposed to help nurses to be able to take part in the process of care for patients and will ensure that one can be able to eliminate any risk of the unreliable standard of living of patients. The process of research in nursing focuses on the concepts such as safety because it determines the quality of recuperation of patients. The safety of patients is, therefore, an important concept in nursing practice.

How the concept can be used to extend or verify extant nursing knowledge

The concept of patient safety can be useful in the process of verification of nursing knowledge because nurses who have skills and knowledge on the safety of patients will be able to provide safe and reliable kind of care. The safety of patients as well can be seen to have improved if the patients can make use of a reliable direction of care. This is because as much as there is a lack of an understanding of the quality of care for patients one can learn of the steps that are used for handling the quality of living of patients.

In the health setting as well there is a need for ensuring that there is a clear step-by-step process being used in the delivery of care. This is an important step because there is an ease in the identification of better quality care. The challenges that may be faced in the health setting are supposed to be managed effectively if one puts into account the aspect of care for patient needs. The process of care for patients is as well evidence of knowledge that one has as a healthcare provider.

Conclusion

The concepts of nursing such as patient safety are useful in the process of development of theories of care and ensuring that better patient care services are provided. This is an important step as well because it allows for the identification of the needs of patients and proposing measures to improve the quality of care. The issues that may be faced in the health setting well are handled if one has an understanding of the safety measures. The concept of the safety of patients is therefore vital for the assurance of the health of patients.
