1. For my project problem I have decided to do my research on the severity and cruciality of African starvation in the eastern six countries. Those countries being Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, and Uganda. I know that there is a lot of people struggling with starvation and that this is a major ongoing issue especially in this region of Africa. I believe that using the business side of my degree we can come up with a plan to continue helping in this area. The psychology disciplinary specialty of this major comes into play by helping these kids and people of Africa cope with this issue and helping them be able to stay positive and happy even with this shortage. Then lastly coaching, I believe this can come into play by simply working hand and hand with the psychology side of things. I believe that essentially psychology is a form of coaching when it comes to helping people. You must connect with the people on a mental level to understand them and be able to help in the best way possible.

a. This problem isn’t necessarily connected to my intended occupation or life’s path. However, this is a problem in certain parts of the world regarding humanity. I believe that should be enough to make someone passionate about this topic and wanting to do anything they could to help this cause. I believe humans should always do whatever they can to help each other because we are all a part of humanity and make up the human race. Helping someone also just always puts a smile on your face, nothing feels greater than the feeling of looking into someone’s eyes, knowing that you’ve done your best to help them, and you get to experience their look of great appreciation. I picked this topic for the project because this is an ongoing issue for years now and I believe that there is something we can do to help. I also have a sense of responsibility on this issue. I am of African descent, although I don’t live there nor have I ever visited, so I feel a sense of family and believe some action should be taken especially since I’m able and well. If I can find a solution or a plan to help with this problem, it would really be a great self esteem boost for all my future projects in life. Knowing the severity of this issue and being able to put my mind to it to complete the task at hand would give me the confidence and will power needed for anything if I put my mind to it.

2. Describe, use, and integrate disciplines

a. Business Administration:

i. “The first modern school of thought concerning management was based on  Frederick Taylor’s principles of scientific management  and emerged in the late 1800s. The principles behind scientific management included emphasizing the system rather than the employee and placing the role of managers above the role of non-managerial staff.” (Maryville University)

ii. Because Business Admin is such a wide field, it can be hard to narrow down the content associated with this discipline. However, it isn’t unusual for your top notch business admin guys to have started from the bottom at lower/entry level positions. If we are to look at an average business admin description, we would likely see things like: “Create and execute organizational goals, policies and procedures

· Manage and analyze product-making or service related activities

· Oversee a company’s finances and budget

· Spearhead the implementation of new technologies

· Hire and/or manage departments and staff

· Create or approve contracts and other agreements

· Identify cost-cutting and performance-improving initiatives” (What is Business Administration)

iii. Business admin comes with many transferable skills such as: problem solving, data analysis, attention to detail, and communication skills.

iv. Regarding the project, business admin could be used in many ways. It could be the leader of a mission trip to these African countries to help provide food. It could also be some type of project manager to oversee the mission trip. Another idea on the topic could be a business or brand that does donations per purchase whether its food or money donations towards the cause.

b. Psychology

i. “Psychology is the academic and applied study of mental functions and behaviors. The word “psychology” comes from two specific Greek words—psyche, which means “soul,” “life,” or “mind,” and logia, which means “the study of.” Simply put, psychology is the study of the mind.” (Lumen Intro to the Field of Psych) The term took the meaning of “mental philosophy” towards the middle of the 19th century

ii. There are 5 pillars of psychology, biological, cognitive, developmental, social and personality, mental and physical health. Each are broken down into their own characteristics.

1. Biological- biopsychology/neuroscience, sensation, consciousness

2. Cognitive- perception, thinking, intelligence, memory

3. Developmental- learning, lifespan development

4. Social and Personality- social, personality, emotion, motivation

5. Mental and Physical Health- abnormal, therapies, stress/lifestyle/health

iii. A psychology discipline brings about many transferrable skills like writing and presentation skills, critical thinking and analytical skills, leadership and teamwork skills, and communication and interpersonal skills.

iv. Use of a psychology discipline for the project would be to help the people of these six countries deal with the tragedy that is going on in their nations. This discipline could give an idea as to what makes people happy and how to help these achieve happiness by other means than just food.

c. Coaching

i. The word “coach” was first used referring to a teacher or tutor around 1830, not in athletics. Coaching has been defined in many ways, one being “to help a person change in the way they wish and helping them go in the direction that they want to go.” (What Is Coaching)

ii. With coaching comes relationship creation, effective communication, effective goal setting, and encouragement of a positive growth mindset.

iii. Coaching is a very diverse discipline that comes with the acquiring of many different skills such as problem-solving skills, critical thinking, leadership, adaptability, teamwork, and communication skills. All these can be applied to sports, education, and life as a whole.

iv. A coaching discipline would be a major help in the area of making out a game plan for how to go about supporting this cause. Lay a foundation for things to accomplish from a team aspect of the operation.

3. I believe that all 3 of my disciplines work hand and hand together. Although they are very different, they are alike in ways that connect with people. When putting all three of the disciplines together you formulate a person that has all the qualities of a valuable leader. Someone that you would like at the head of any operation. One that knows how to think critically, communicate on all levels, solve problems and get others to follow them in teamwork.
