Secondary - data already partially interpreted by others
Open / closed information
Open - freely accessible data
Closed - confidential or secret data
White, grey or black information
White - easily accessible but often of low value
Grey - requires more effort but also has more value
Black - of great value but often at the limit of legality.

In Canada and the U.S. a public company must produce an annual report.
A public company in Ontario would be on the Toronto Stock Exchange and would file an annual report with the Ontario Securities Commission or the Securities & Exchange Commission.
A private company, however, is not required to disclose its activities.
Databases such as Mergent Online or Factima may be useful for research on public companies.
