Part 1: Comparison Essay
They both are votive statues. Which means they are function to worship god. They were placed in temples as a represent of people being there, as the candles we lighted up in the church nowadays.
“Votive Statue of Gudea” is made out of diorite, a hard stone which is not easy for carving. Maybe the sculptor attempts to make it last longer in time. However, using diorite as material emphasizes Gudea’s importance. On the other hand, “Twelve Votive Figures”, are made of limestone which is easier to find and easier to curve as well. Due to the differences of the material, Votive Statue of Gudea has closed contour in his arms, and the Twelve Votive Figures has open contour in their arms and legs.
They are both naturalistic, which people could clearly define it’s a male or female figure. Additionally, they have stylized faces and body. All the men sculptures of the twelve votive figures have stylized beard and hair. Gudea is holding a vessel with water spilling to the ground like two little rivers, and there are fishes leaping out the vessel. The water and fishes are also stylized.
