Writing Assignment: Comparison Contrast Essay
In at least 600 words (up to 800 words is acceptable), you will write a 5 (or more, if you wish) paragraph comparison contrast essay about two artists or performers (such as painters, musicians, dancers, etc) or two works of art (such as paintings, songs, books, poems, or movies), or any other person/people, object/objects, or abstract idea/ideas of your choice provided that your audience (your classmates, instructor, consultants at the Writing Center/ACE Editing Lab, etc.) are familiar with your subjects for comparison and contrast. That means you may not choose actors, writers, books, etc that your audience is not familiar with. If you are not sure if your topic is acceptable, ask me before you decide on a topic! The essay should focus on comparing (showing the similarities) and contrasting (showing the differences) of your chosen subjects.
Your essay must have an introduction, at least three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. If possible, include a hook in the introduction to get the readers’ attention. The introduction should include a thesis statement that explains the relationship between the two subjects or gives reasons why the relationship is important. Decide whether you will use a point by point or a subject by subject organization for the body paragraphs of the essay. Your essay should end with a conclusion in which you summarize the similarities and differences and give your opinion about the topic OR explain why one of the subjects is better than the other OR why they are of equal value.
Your essay must display unity and coherence.
Make sure to edit your essay for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting[footnoteRef:1]. Pay particular attention to the use of transitions that express comparison and contrast. [1: For MLA formatting, see the Essay Formatting sample under Modules, Canvas.]
Finally and very importantly, rely ONLY on your knowledge and experience because we have not studied strategies for using outside sources yet. If you use outside sources, remember to CITE the source and use the strategies for source use: Quoting, Paraphrasing, or Summarizing. Outside sources in a language other than English are not allowed in this class. “We haven’t studied these topics yet” is NOT an excuse for plagiarism as you don’t have to use outside sources in the first place. If you plagiarize on your paper, your score is automatically 0 (zero).
Assignment Timeline[footnoteRef:2]: [2: Make sure to make your appointments with the Writing Center NOW. One appointment with the Writing Center consultants per paper is required. Please forward the feedback the consultant will email you after the appointment. For every additional meeting on the same paper, you will receive 3 bonus points. ]
