Comparing Styles

Watch the film below of contemporary Westerns and draw significant comparisons and contrasts between the film conventions of classic (for example, the old John Ford Westerns starring John Wayne) and contemporary Westerns. As always, choose at least two scenes from the film you chose to watch to use as supporting examples for your analysis. Screen shot each of them. Be specific in your analysis, and do not summarize the plot.

Although made in 2007, this is an old-fashioned, classic Western in the best sense. It has many classic Western tropes and even takes place shortly after the Civil War. It’s a battle of wills between the two main characters, an honest rancher and a complex, ruthless bandit. The rancher volunteers to get the outlaw on the 3:10 train to Yuma for the price of $200, but we know it can’t be that simple
