Maya Angelou [poems “recovery” and “refusal”]
In both poems, Maya Angelou uses allegory to explain the trouble that goes on throughout our lives. She uses hyperbole, trope and figurative league to explain how love could bring hope but sometimes it could also weight on you.
In “Recovery” Angelou teaches how love is just a feeling and then she explains, though love does end in tragedy, we must stay strong. “Refusal” is the opposite of “Recovery,” In “Refusal” Angelou does not accept the outcome of having to lose her love and instead she hopes that one day she will be reunited with her love.
In “Recovery” Angelou then says, "proper in conclusion" which means, if what they say about love is true, “should snip the wings forbidding further flight.” Based on the last phase, Angelou is telling us about a person to whom they have sworn to stay with for the rest of their life should never leave their side. As in “Refusal” Angelou writes,” in what other lives or land have I known your lips, your hands, your laughter brave, irreverent, those sweet excesses that I adore;” Angelou seemed to be praising her lover in a calm yet respectful way: As site wrote "what surety is there that we will meet again, on other worlds some future time undated.” Now instead of having a state of mind of hate for her beloved, she asks what are the chances of us are meeting again, the future is unknown.
In “Recovery,” this statement,” but I, now rift of that confusion," Angelou sees that love is just a feeling. In the phase “I am lifted-up and speeding toward the light” means, due to the disappointment in love, Angelou has now lost all hope in love, resulting in her living a carefree life. It seems like in “Recovery” Angelou could not bear the pain of losing a loved one and in doing so she wanted to forget it all. But in “refusal,” Angelou felt the opposite.” I defy my body's haste,” Angelou indicates that she does not accept the outcome, “without the promise of one more sweet encounter, I will not deign to die.” She hopes that in future times their love will entwine once more.
