Continuum of Care

One way to think about services for older adults is to imagine them along a scale or "continuum of care" that ranges from services for active, healthy seniors (at left) to services for frail adults who are ill or who need help with many of their activities of daily living (at right). Continuum Blank.png

Services for older adults fall along the continuum; that is, they serve older adults who range from independent and active to very frail with respect to their "functional capacity." Functional capacity is people's ability to function or perform daily activities. Below are examples of services that exist in most communities and where they fall along the continuum.

A Closer Look

Senior Centers are designed for older adults who are healthy and active. They provide meals, have recreational and educational events, serve meals, and offer opportunities for socialization.

The Bay Area has a wide array of senior centers, which reflect the culture of diverse neighborhoods.

Mental Health Services

Mental Health Services may include individual or group counseling. They may focus on issues such as grief for persons who have lost loved ones, or substance abuse.

Services for caregivers

Screen Shot 2017-03-11 at 4.55.53 PM.png

Services for caregivers are enormously important for ensuring that older adults have the help they need. Caregivers need information, resources, and support to address the emotional demands of providing care, staying healthy, and learning skills to help them provide the best care possible.

Citing Sources for Resource Assignment

For the Community Resources for the Elderly assignment, you will be citing a minimum of 3 references. In addition to citing research articles, as you did for a previous assignment, you may also want to cite books, websites, or interviews with the employees or clients at the agencies you research . Your textbook is a great source of information about services and even highlights some programs in the Bay Area. They are scattered throughout the text, some in chapters we've already covered and others appear later. Feel free to cite it.

It's also likely that you will want to cite an agency's website or other websites that explain services. I also strongly recommend that you visit the agency you're writing about (call in advance and make an appointment) . If you interview an employee or client, you will want to

make an appointment). If you interview an employee or client, you will want to cite them in what is called a "personal communication."

I've included a few examples below:

References

Online articles follow the same guidelines for printed articles. Include all information available, and the URL. Because online materials can potentially change URLs, however, APA recommends providing a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), when it is available, as opposed to the URL.

Example:

Citing a personal communication

An interview or discussion is not considered recoverable data, so no reference in needed in the reference list. You should cite the interview within the text as a personal communication .

Example: According to one participant at the Bethany Center, "This is a wonderful place to live" (J. Smith, personal communication, April 5. 2018) .

Citing websites

If you are citing an entire website, provide the address of the site within the text of your paper.

Example: The Bethany Center's website is a good source of information about the center(www.bethanycenter.org) .

Evaluating Services

There are lots of ways to research agencies, including :
