Community Learning Assignment 1

The Community Learning Assignment contains two parts related to an online learning event that you will attend/view.

Part 1 is due at the end of Week 8 and requires you to discuss what online event you will be attending and the reasons for this decision. This can include a TED Talk on an issue relevant to the course. One online resource that I want to highlight is the "Future History" documentary series. Future History is a "documentary series about harnessing Indigenous knowledge and Indigenizing the future " (https://futurehistorytv.ca). Each episode is about one aspect of the Indigenous experience in Canada. The videos usually run around 20 mins. The series is available through the CBC Gem website. Libraries will also have other great resources/documentaries available online and CBC and Netflix also have documentary series that are short in length.You do not need to attend/view the event before you submit Community Learning Assignment 1, however, you will need to have attended/view it before you submit Community Learning Assignment 2, as that

Part 2 is due at the end of Week 12 and requires that you reflect and analyze the online event you attended/viewed.

The Community Learning Assignment 1 is due by 11:30 p.m on the last day of the Week 8.

Rationale

“We emphasize that sociology can be a liberating practical activity, not just an abstract intellectual exercise. By revealing the opportunities and constraints you face, sociology can help teach you who you are and what you can become in today’s social and historical context. We cannot know what the future will bring, but we can at least know the choices we confront and the likely consequences of our actions. From this point of view, sociology can help us create the best possible future. That has always been sociology’s principal justification, and so it must be today” (Brym, Roberts, & Strohschein, 2016).

1. CHOOSE one (1) online learning event that connect to your topics of interest in this course. Please contact the Instructor if you are not sure if an event is eligible/appropriate for this assignment.

2. PLANNING: Answer the following questions in your submission:

a. Event Details: Provide details of the online event you are planning to attend. Consider: who/what/when/where/why. Provide date of the event (must occur prior to Week 12 in the course) and any contact information that you have (i e website flyer recording link etc )
