Phase 1 – Social Assessment
· Nearly half or 49%, of the severe pedestrian injuries occur over a six-hour period from 6:00 pm to 12:00 am.
· The number of severe pedestrian injuries gradually increases from Tuesday through Monday.
· 59% of the severe pedestrian injuries are recorded during the Fall and Winter months, September through February.
· 35% occur from October-December
· More people on the roadways creates more potential conflicts between people walking, biking, and driving.
Phase 2 – Epidemiological Assessment
· About 33% of all fatal and incapacitating pedestrian crashes occur on 1% of San Antonio Roadways.
Goal: Eliminate traffic fatalities over the next 30 years.
Phase 3 – Behavioral and Environmental Assessment
Contributing behavioral & environmental factors.
· Phones (Distracted Pedestrians and Drivers)
· Time of day (Rush hour, Dusk and Dawn, limited visibility)
· Days of the week (The weekend)
· Month of the year (Weather- rain, snow, ice, wind, Holidays- more traffic)
Phase 4 – Educational & Ecological Assessment
Educational: communicate the importance of safety for all on our roadways, whether a person is driving, bicycling, or walking and encourage all to practice safety and follow all traffic laws.
· Stay in well-lit areas
· Wear brighter colors
· Be more attentive (Pedestrians and Drivers)
Ecological: construct improvements to enhance safety and accessibility along roadways, crosswalks, walkways, and bikeways.
Phase 5 – Administrative and Policy Assessment
Administrative and Policy: enforce traffic safety laws and continue to support and advertise safety initiatives.
· Click It or Ticket
· Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving
· Distracted Driving
· Stop the Texts. Stop the Wrecks.
