There are three components to congruence and each carries a different weight in communication.
- Words are only 7% of the total communication package.
- Tone carries 38% and
- Body language is 55% of the overall picture.
This means that while someone is talking, we make mental note of the words used, the tone of voice, and the body language, remembering the weight each of these elements holds and how congruent they are.

3. Do not be afraid of silence. Silence gives time for thought processes to work.
EXERCISE (This exercise will have to be left out if time is a factor)
1. Pair off into partners A and B as before. For 5 minutes partner A will share an experience while partner B asks questions relating to the experience.
Example: "You were telling me about your brothers, but you didn't mention any sisters. Are there no sisters in your family?" Or, "You talked excitedly about your early school years, but then you dropped your voice and were silent for a time. Could you share a little more about what happened later in life?"
2. Debrief for 2 minutes when partner A will share the effect the questions have had on him/her.
3. Reverse the exercise with partner B telling a story for 5 minutes and partner A asking questions.
4. Debrief for 2 minutes.
5. Bring everyone back together, debrief the exercise and answer questions.
