Proposed Intervention: Services Offered – 8 Week Break Down
Introduction/Program Overview/Icebreakers will be conducted to allow the adolescents to get to know the staff as well as each other. Staff will work to build rapport and encourage open communication in this safe environment. An overview of the weeks to come will be given to prepare clients. Rules and expectations will be set to ensure understanding.
Psychoeducation will focus on providing knowledge and information about struggles the adolescents may be experiencing such as poor emotional regulation, depression, etc. This will allow them to better understand not only themselves on a deeper level but also the myriad of treatment modalities available to assist them. We will investigate the juvenile justice system, individual cases, and review various ways to advocate for themselves throughout.
Emotion Identification and regulation will provide a brief overview of emotions and ways to better manage their reactions to them. Visual examples will be shown to allow the adolescents to engage and participate in a discussion of what the character is going through and how-to solve the issue. Proper problem solving skills will be discussed and activities to engage these skills will be conducted.
Coping Skills week will focus on discussing what coping strategies are, how they work within us, and assist clients in identifying what examples work for them. Coping strategies are not a one size fits all solution. We will engage in various skills while youth explores and creates their personal toolbox.
Mindfulness will allow clients to participate in grounding exercises and utilize their senses to connect to the present moment. An overview of mindfulness reasoning and skills will be discussed, and guided meditations will be practiced helping to calm the mind. Mindfulness can allow you to decrease impulsivity and clear your mind fog during decision making.
Barrier Identification will allow the adolescents to work with the social worker and their peers to better understand what hurdles they need to overcome to be on a safer path toward the future. Adolescents will share their struggles, changes they wish to make, and begin the process of creating a strengths-based approach to overcoming these.
Community Interests will be discussed for the client's eventual re-entry into society. Social workers will present various vocational programs, training opportunities, and community resources. Adolescents will work to identify programs in their area they wish to pursue in the future and create a plan to follow through.
Support Systems/Wrap up will be highlighted and identified as they will be important to future success. Adolescents will create a safety plan including social supports as well as various resources provided by the social workers to encourage success with their plans post release. We will discuss what we have learned throughout the program, and conduct an award ceremony for participation.
