Reflection
Throughout this class I have developed more of an understanding related to theories and how they are applied to practice. Prior to this course I hadn’t been really been researching nursing theories to guide my practice and I didn’t have a true understanding of how much evidence based research is provided during the research of these theories to support them. I also didn’t know that anyone can develop a theory and put it to the test. I have learned that theories and models are very valuable in nursing as they provide support and evidence based research to improve patient outcomes and achieve patient goals. Theories guide us in our nursing practice every day while we providing care to our patients (Rahim, 2016). I enjoyed reviewing different theories and models throughout this course and will continue to do so in the future to support my practice. My philosophy of advanced practice nursing has improved over the past 9 weeks as it is more dynamic and complex. Philosophy of science is a perspective –a lense, a way you see the world, and, in the case of advanced practice nurses, the viewpoint the nurse acts from in every encounter with a patient, family, or group (Butts, 2018). Philosophy changes as time evolves and growth occurs. I feel my knowledge has grown during this course and influenced the change and development of my own nursing philosophy. According to Hountras (2014), “Defining and articulating a personal philosophy helps the nurse better understand the motivation and reasoning behind his or her work” (p. 1). During this course my own personal philosophy has evolved and I have a better understanding and motivation behind my goal of becoming an advanced practice nurse.
