INCREASE IN ADHD DIAGNOSES
Attention, Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has been identified as the leading behavioral
disorder among American children. A study conducted by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association
between 2010 and 2017 indicated a growing trend in the diagnoses of ADHD in American
Children. The study stated that there was a 30% rise in the number of children who were diagnosed
with ADHD. ADHD in children is demonstrated by the children's inability to pay attention to
anything for a couple of minutes without getting disrupted. The children with the behavioral
condition also have a challenge of controlling their impulses, which results in undesired reactions
to events that do not require the kind of response the children give. The Blue Cross Blue Shield
Association identified the of increased diagnoses was among school going children, especially the
middle school learners. According to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, the ADHD
behavioral disorder was more prevalent in middle school boys, who were twice the number of
middle school girls diagnosed with ADHD behavioral disorder. The research on the increase of
ADHD behavioral disorder was done on one child between two and eighteen years. The growing
trend in the number of American children diagnosed with ADHD behavioral disorder is a worrying
trend. Such is because American society will be raising a population with a behavioral disorder
that is highly impactful on their personalities (Blue Cross Blue Shield, 2019).
Out of the children diagnosed with ADHD behavioral disorder, 27% of them were
receiving behavioral therapy. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that children
diagnosed with ADHD should be given behavioral therapy for those below the age of six years
by other behavioral disorders such as depression and anxiety that need to be dealt with for children
to recover from ADHD completely. In the event that behavioral therapy does not effectively relieve
the child from the disorder, pediatricians are advised to accompany the behavioral therapy with
the relevant drugs that will fasten the process of recovery from the behavioral disorder. Apart from
the proven clinical treatments of ADHD behavioral disorder, prevention can be the first method
that can be used to protect young children. The families where there is no history of ADHD and
any other mental disorder, pregnant women should avoid the misuse of drugs to allow the child's
brain to develop well before the child is born. Avoiding drugs will also reduce the risk of premature
births; hence the child will be given a chance to evade from being part of a growing trend of ADHD
in children (Gawrilow, 2018).
The observed increasing trend in the diagnoses of ADHD in American society is a risk
factor that needs immediate attention. Raising children with mental disorders is preparing the
United States of America to rely on imported labor to accomplish their economic needs. Such is
because American society will have a workforce with a mental illness that cannot work to uplift
the economy.

and behavioral therapy followed by medication for children above the age of six years to correct
the ADHD behavioral disorder (Graves, MD, 2019). Regardless of the growing trend in the
diagnoses of ADHD, American children are not receiving the right form of therapy to correct the
disorder. The reluctance to offer a suitable form of treatment puts the children diagnosed with
ADHD behavioral disorder at risk of developing severe ADHD (Sadek, 2018).
The increasing exposure to agents that cause ADHD has increased the ADHD behavioral
disorder diagnoses among American children to cause the disorder. The trend in the diagnosis of
ADHD behavioral disorder has been motivated by environmental and hereditary factors. One of
the causes of ADHD in children in genes. A child born from parents who have a history of ADHD
is likely to develop a behavioral disorder. Other mental disorders in a family can also create an
enabling environment for ADHD behavioral disorder to develop in young children. Premature
birth is another cause of ADHD behavioral disorder. An increase in premature births in American
society increases the trend of ADHD diagnoses among young children. Also, mothers who engage
in substance abuse during the pregnancy period have caused the trend of ADHD behavioral
diagnoses to increase since the drugs affect the baby's brain development before it is born. The
environmental agent that causes ADHD in young children is exposure to toxins. Toxins such as
lead that are mainly contained in paints have been found to put children at risk of developing the
ADHD behavioral disorder (CDC, 2020) .
Studies have indicated that the suitable treatment of ADHD disorder is behavioral therapy.
