Elf movie analysis

To me no Holiday season goes without a classic viewing of the movie elf. Not only does it spread the idea of holiday humor and cheer, I believe it has some intercultural aspects that I can tie into what I learned over the semester about immigration and acculturation.

In the movie Buddy the elf best portrayed by will Ferrell gives a comedic twist on the idea of giving up on one’s original culture to adopt a whole new culture and buddy does that by first feeling like he doesn’t fit in to accidentally being raised with elf’s because he looks very different to the rest of the elves. Later, in the film Buddy’s manager tells buddy his father lives in New York and Buddy plans a journey from the north pole to New York city to meet his actual family. Buddy learns a lot about his fathers cultural along the way and starts to acculturate to the new society and his fathers helps him get a job and learn the new ways of life as a professional adult. His father is in disbelief that he has buddy as his son so he try his hardest to get buddy alone and independent in the city but Buddy wants to be integrated to his family by keeping his joyfull elf attitude and also making his new way of living as a productive member of society in new York with is Father at his lawfirm while also developing a love interest with one of his female co workers named jovie who originally wanted to segregrate buddy from her life cause they had two different cultures set. A lot of things come as a culture shock for both buddy and his family that live in new York. For example buddy is used to eating really sweet things like candy and cookies even for meals like dinner and lunch and for his father this is very odd to normally eat like that.
