In Chapter 11 we’ll come to learn that conflict is defined as “an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce resources, and interference from the other party in achieving their goals” (p. 369). This chapter also introduces us to the different conflict styles: (1) avoidance, (2) accommodation, (3) competition, (4) compromise, and (5) collaboration.

For this assignment, you are to apply the content from Chapter 11 to analyze conflict in an interpersonal relationship. The conflict you choose can come from a movie, show, or you may choose to analyze real-life conflict in one of your own relationships. Your paper should cite three direct quotes (one of these may come from your textbook, and the other two should be found in the database). In a 5-6 page paper, you are to address the following:

1. Give a background on the nature of the conflict you are analyzing. In other words, who is involved and what is causing conflict in this relationship? Which goals are not being met by one or more of the parties involved? How is the pair interdependent, and what resource(s) is/are scarce (affection, money, time, etc.)?

2. Identify the individual conflict style displayed by the parties involved (avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, or collaboration). Please provide concrete examples from the exchange which suggest which conflict style is used.

3. Does the pair display a complementary, symmetrical, or toxic approach to conflict? If so, how?

4. Did the pair handle the conflict effectively? If so, how? If not, what could the individuals have done differently for a better outcome?

Your paper should adhere to APA format (cover page, running head, in-text citations, and reference page). Your paper should also be free of spelling and grammatical errors, while making for a cohesive/coherent read.
