COM 114 – ASSIGNMENT 1 (15%)

Course: COM 114 Fundamentals of Speech Communication

Term: Summer II 2020

Assignment Title: Interpretive Reading Analysis

The purpose of an interpretive reader is to communicate through voice the work of an author. In other words, the reader makes the story come alive. Successful interpretation of an author's novel depends on the reader’s understanding of its overall meaning. To achieve this the reader should identify the story's general purpose by adopting the appropriate speech style. In other words, the reader is expected to use nonverbal communication and vocal variety, tempo, rhythm, inflection and pauses to convey the story's emotions and actions. The primary objective of this assignment is to help you identify and comment on the vocal and nonverbal techniques used by the reader to strengthen the effectiveness of his reading.

Smart (1:54-2:48 minutes)

Smart My dad gave me one-dollar bill

'Cause I'm his smartest son,

And I swapped it for two shiny quarters

'Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the quarters

And traded them to Lou

For three dimes -- I guess he don't know

That three is more than two!

Just then, along came old blind Bates

And just 'cause he can't see

He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,

And four is more than three!

And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs

Down at the seed-feed store,

And the fool gave me five pennies for them,

And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,

And he got red in the cheeks

And closed his eyes and shook his head—

Too proud of me to speak!
