PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Art Nouveau translates to New Art and was aimed at

modernizing design, seeking to escape the historical

styles that had been popular in years prior. From the

1880s until the First World War, western Europe and the

United States witnessed the development of Art

Nouveau.

Artists drew inspiration from both organic and geometric

forms. They gravitated towards hues such as muted

greens, browns, yellows, and blues. Taking inspiration

from the unruly aspects of the natural world, Art

Nouveau influenced art and architecture especially in the

applied arts, graphic work, and illustration.

The Space Age trend began in the mid-to-late

'60s with designers like Courrèges, Rabanne,

and Pierre Cardin, who were inspired by the

global space race. The Soviets landed in 1959,

and Buzz Aldrin took his historic first step ten

years later. Andre Courréges is thought to be

the Godfather of space age fashion; notably

employing geometric shapes into his 1960s

silhouettes and being the first designer to

incorporate plastics and PVC into his works.

The early 80s were somewhat subdued in color, where we see a lot browns and tans and

oranges. Blocky shapes were everywhere and velour was hot, velvet was even hotter. For

both men and women, the waistline was a little high. In 1983 there was a slight 1950s-style

throwback, especially in women’s dresses.

The club kids created a movement that would forever influence the face of fashion, art and

popular culture. They created a space in which the disenfranchised youth of 1980's New

York; gay, queer, transgender, non-binary and different could experience a feeling possibly

unfelt during the day; freedom. Club kids were known for their wild ensembles, which drew

inspiration from punk, S&M, and clown styles. Often homemade or assembled from thrift-

store items, the outfits were unique and bold expressions of identity.

“That was part of the ethos of the day. You were a legend in your own mind. Everyone was a

star, and everyone could be a star. All you had to do was throw some glitter on,” Glam said.

In the 2010s, fast fashion from Japan and elsewhere

becomes widespread. A ‘super mix’ fashion arises,

merging three major aspects of street fashion—street style

, gyaru style, and the konsaba or more conservative style.

The result is a ‘sweet’ style that is both kawaii and fairly

fashionable. A shift took place after the Great East Japan

Earthquake on March 11, 2011, as people place more

importance on finding a way of life that is uniquely their

own and rethinking what is important to them. The

striking Harajuku style captures the imaginations of

people all over the world. Typified by its colorful

theatricality and quirky character themes, it’s the creative,

funky style we all wish we had the guts to wear.
