The program chosen was NBA FIT which is an extension of the NBA Cares league. The Cares league is a global outreach program addressing social issues giving families a place to live, learn and play in 40 countries, including the United States (NBA FIT, 2017). The league outlines five keys to wellness: nutrition, sleep, exercise, managing stress, recognizing problems before the escalation, and developing and using proactive coping skills. The NBA FIT program is a community-based organization committed to youth and their families' lifestyle improvements and performance. It provides weekly updates about the importance of physical and mental health, nutrition, and rest and recovery. Its starts with tips to prioritize health, self-care awareness, collaborative care and concludes with the development of a plan to achieve those goals.
The NBA’s health and safety outreach forces on local and national coordination to track and monitor Coronavirus and its evolving effects on public health (NBA FIT, 2017). Its goal is to give information on current guidelines, prevention tools the NBA is taking and report the current number of those impacted by the pandemic. The NBA’s mental health outreach forces on the four core pillars of the mind: more, inclusive, narrative, and defined (NBA FIT, 2017). The mission is to educate and engage the community through lived experience and expression. Lastly, the program posts workout videos of well-known celebrities such as Lonzo Ball, Bradley Beal, DeMarcus Cousins, and Andre Drummond (NBA FIT, 2017). The videos aim to show the community that there are things that they can complete at home or at the gym that will improve their overall physical and mental health demonstrated by professionals. The program encourages better living by taking small steps towards a centered mind, body, and spirit.
