Core Theory of Cognitive Behavioral Family Therapy

I will be using Cognitive-behavioral family therapy; Chapter 8, page 310, clearly states that this therapy is built up of behavior, cognitive & social learning, and contextual and experimental waves. This page clearly says that the behavior is built and expanded from another. This therapy coincides with the case of Sandra. Sandra had a mentality of being excellent in everything she does. After getting the transition, she is overwhelmed due to a new position in his profession. The initial behavior leads to another behavioral change that leads to having a panic attack.

By using this theory of therapy, I can conclude that the act of Sandra having a panic attack is based on her initial behavior of being perfect in everything she does. Now she is worried about the transition because she fears whether she will make it ideal as before.

On page 311 in the same chapter, it talks about this therapy being administered to two people in a relationship. Michael- her son, also plays a big role in her current condition due to his transition and her love for him being a single mother.

Through the sociogram tool, I Can know that there is a strong bond between Sandra and her son. Being a single mother means that all the love she has is for Michael. This is a clear indication that Michael plays a significant role in her behavior.

DSM-V Diagnosis Identification

This is an essential identification tool that I will use to know the mental health problem in Sandra. This will be done by performing the diagnosis to Sandra using the available criteria in his health history problem. It will narrow up the entire Sandra's problem; then, it will be narrowed to an appropriate diagnosis.

For example, Sandra has been gone through sexual harassment; could this be dictated from her condition? I will look at the duration of that incident and the current situation to answer this question. The present change may have a significant influence compared to a change that happened a long time ago.

Intervention and Goal

In this field, I will use the approaches in Chapter 8, page 311. whereby I will use Teaching compliance and socialization whereby I will teach how Michael will comply with her mother to curb her condition. For example, Sandra may be amazed at how she will be able to deal with her new position and do home chores, but in case Michael can help her. It can ease her condition.

There will be the use of improving parenting requests whereby I will teach Sandra how she can make Michael help her in daily chores by creating an ideal environment

I will follow through 4 steps that have been explained in Chapter 8, page 313, to understand Sandra every detailed information about her

Step 1 Assessment behavior-will help in knowing the current behavior of Sandra after the transition.

Step 2-Targeting behavior and thought of Sandra and Michael

Step 3-Education- This step will enable me to give them proper ways of doing things. Like schedule and how to adapt to transition by seeking advices and searching information about the new role and good parenting.

Step4-Replace and refrain-I will replace that thought of Sandra on being perfect and ask her to work smartly as this will enable her not to be over-excited.

I will use the intervention of the accepting strategy explained on page 334 of chapter 8 to enable Sandra to get the changes; there will be the use of unified detachment that will allow Sandra to develop enough emotional distance with maybe her husband, who we are not told of him. I will also use tolerance building that will enable her to have a positive aspect on her career

The intervention will be done for 60 days every two weeks, and the improvement will be recorded.

The goal of this intervention is to see Sandra adapting with the transition and the problem panic attack stops

Therapy Participants

Sandra – She has a Panic Attack

Michael –Can help her mother in curbing the condition

Sandra is the core author of her misfortune due to willingly to be perfect. Michael spend most of the time with her mother on weekends, the act of her mother being promoted to be a full professor may not have time with Michael, thus Michael should be taught on how to deal with the condition incase her mother schedule changes.

Goals of Treatment

Sandra:

Heals from panic attack

scope with new transition

able to have work-family balance

Sandra should be restore initial condition. Initially she had no panic attack until she was promoted to a new profession. Sandra should be taught on how she can have a positive mind of being successful regardless of the profession position. She need to balance her time at work and with Michael well.

6

Problem Presentation

Sandra was promoted to be a full professor at Prestigious University

Her son graduated from Elementary to Middles school

Through the transition process, Sandra feels overwhelmed

There is the emergence of a panic attack in her

The panic attack changed sequence from 4 months to 2-4 weeks.

It is beyond a reasonable doubt that Sandra have Psychological problem due to the current exposure to the new environment. The best therapy to undergo is Cognitive behavioral therapy. This family therapy will help her recognizing negative and unhelpful thoughts that she has the led to panic attack. This therapy will also help to identify and also assist in employing the way her emotions affect her action regarding the new profession and her son.

7

Circular Hypothesis Problem Analysis

There is a relationship between Panic Attack and transition

Through the transition process, she is promoted to be a full professor while at the same time Michael graduate from Elementary school.

There is an act of feeling overwhelmed, and she haves a panic attack which she has never felt before.

The condition worsens as the panic attack duration has substantially reduced to 2-4 weeks from 4months.

All Sandra problem revolves around her transition and her desire to be perfect. Her friend Candice state that she like being perfect in everything she does. Now she get a big role she have never been before. The desire makes her to over think that lead to stress that result to implication of hippocampus, prefrontal cortex part of brain. As the brain tries to respond with the stress she has panic attack. As a therapist, Sandra need to re curbed from those thoughts that implicates her health status.

8

Mutually Reinforcing Behavior

New profession position excitement

Family–work balance

Home structuring and job performance

Sandra behavior pattern have substantially changed due to the transition. Transition brings about new profession she have never been before. She need to have a new home structure that balances with the job.

9

ABC Theory

The act transition of Sandra by being promoted to be a professor and the act of Michael graduating from Elementary school puts Sandra into a dilemma on how she can excellently perform in the new job and at the same time have time with Michaels as she did before. This makes her stressed up due to overthinking. The body tries to respond to this, and in the process, she has a panic attack.

ABC theory is a very essential tool that can be used to assessing and formulating the problem of Sandra. The ingredient of her heart attack is simply as a result of the transition.

10
