Instructional Plan Title: |
The uses of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division signs in mathematics. |
Lesson Summary and Focus: |
In this lesson, the students will be taught the mathematics signs. They will be taught the appropriate use of each of the four primary mathematics signs. The focus of the lesson will be to use creative arts to promote the understanding of the mathematics signs by the third-grade students. |
Classroom and Student Factors/Grouping: |
The mathematics lesson is taught in the morning before the tea break to enhance understanding among the students. The class has 27 students, who will all be taking the mathematics lessons. There are no students in the class that need special attention. However, there are three gifted students in the class who understand the concepts very fast. The pace of the slowest student to understand will be used in this class. That will ensure that all the students in the class understand the mathematical concepts taught. |
National/State Learning Standards: |
The standards that are the focus of the lesson are problem solving and reasoning. That will ensure that the students use mathematical signs appropriately. Communication will also be used when teaching and when the students are clarifying the issues that they have not understood. |
Specific Learning Target(s)/Objectives: |
By the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: Differentiate and explain the four primary signs that are used in mathematics. Identify when each of the signs should be used. Describe the significance of the signs in mathematics. Describe how creative arts may be used to aid in understanding the use of the signs. Identify each sign and it name and meaning. |
Academic Language |
Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division The terms will be described in detail indicating their signs and how and when they should be used in mathematical problems. |
Resources, Materials, Equipment, and Technology: |
The third-grade mathematics course book will be used. Small, molded circles will be issued to the students so that they may utilize them in addition and subtraction problems. A multiplication table will be provided to the students. A laptop to show the student’s videos of how mathematical signs are used. |
Section 2: Instructional Planning
Anticipatory Set · I will provide the students with a multiplication table that they can use during the lesson. · I will use a video to show the students numbers and how the mathematical signs may be used in the numbers. · I will ask questions about numbers and signs and document the student’s answers on the white board.
Time Needed 5minutes for warming up before beginning to teach |
Multiple Means of Representation · I will use a video to illustrate how the signs in mathematics are used. · I will provide a mathematical table that will make it easier for the students when tackling multiplication and division problems. · I will provide examples of problems that have been solved. · I will provide small, molded shapes to help in understanding the concept from a creative arts point of view.
The early finishers will be requested to help their peers to enhance understanding.
Time Needed |
Multiple Means of Engagement · I will teach the students by working out examples and answer their questions on the areas that they do not understand. · I will ask the fast learners to explain the concepts to their peers on the white board. · I will implement structured discussion to enhance understanding.
Time Needed |
Multiple Means of Expression · The students will be required to tackle problems on how to use the math signs in class. · They will also use the molded shapes to illustrate the use of the signs practically. |
Time Needed |
Extension Activity and/or Homework At the end of the lesson, the students will be given an assignment on the topic to tackle. That will increase the student’s understanding of the topic. The assignment will be an exercise from the course books provided.
