This project aims to oppose the trait theory of leadership belief that leaders are born and not made. This is done through analysing two women who both came from a similar difficult background and remarkably became two very well respected self-made leaders. Furthermore, both these leaders acquired two opposing leadership styles as one is shown to be very relationship oriented (transformational/charismatic) whereas the other one more task oriented (autocratic).

They both developed leadership qualities through their living. Although they have a similar background, they came up with completely opposite leadership style.

The main limitation of this research concerning Coco Chanel is that she was truly an autocratic leader within the working environment, specifically about her management style. However, the influence that she had made in the fashion industry, as well as her contribution in women’ emancipation show that she also fits transformational and charismatic leadership style.

Concerning Oprah’s leadership style, she was uncontestably a charismatic and transformational leader, however her behaviour towards her followers shows she can be considered as a servant leader. It is illustrated by the fact that she has promoted some of her followers such as Dr. Phil and Gayle King to become highly popular individual.

Above the information has been presented above, it can be concluded that:

  • Leadership are not born and is based on the future development
  • A leader can include various of leadership style
  • The same background may produce the different leadership styles
