· Answer 4 of the following questions.

· Each is worth 25 points.

· Clearly indicate which question number you are answering before each reply.

· Each question should take 2-4 full paragraphs to answer.

· Choose questions wisely to make sure you can finish the exam in time and that you have significant ways to use course theory in each of your responses.

· Although this is not graded as a paper, your answers should be legibly written in complete sentence/paragraph format.

· Each response should meaningfully use and define at least 3 key terms (important theoretical words you learned from course readings that the average student likely would not know before taking this course).  Use quotations as they are helpful, but your definitions should make clear that you know what the term means in YOUR OWN WORDS and on your own terms.  Your applications should be specific enough to show the utility of the theory.  Don’t just show your reader the “what” of the theory, show them why and how the theory is useful to you.

· Make sure to  underline and or bold  ALL theoretical terms that you are using.

· You have enough questions to choose form that you should NOT duplicate the theoretical terms you use in multiple questions (or if you do that they don’t count towards your 5 terms for that question).

(BONUS) If you anticipate that you may perform two letter grades higher (or more) on this exam that you did on your midterm, please let me know your grade on the midterm so I can compare quickly.

1) Use a final presentation OTHER THAN YOUR OWN to discuss some key problematics of tourism and the proposed solutions offered by the group. Discuss at least one theory that they did not specifically address but might have been useful to their analysis.

2) What does Bowman mean when he says we should be theoretically “ambivalent” about tourism? Use at least one concrete example that shows how the positive and negative aspects of tourism are often intertwined.

3) What are some of the key was in which Louisiana is marketed as an attraction?  What problems arise from this construction?  What opportunities?

4)Choose 2 different “travel guides” from The Art of Travel and compare and contrast the travel advice each might offer if you were visiting a specific site of your choosing.

5) Discuss the relationship between alienation, modernity, and tourism using specific examples from your own travel experiences.

6) Discuss the role that chance can play in making tourism less alienating using Bowmans “Stonewall” essay and at least one other example.

7) Describe how a specific theory from this course might be usefully translated to a context outside of tourism.

8) Design an alternative assignment that you think would be useful for future versions of this course.  Describe your assignment making use of at least one course theory.
