CMGTCB/545: Influence and Leadership in Technology

Course Information Description This course discusses how to effectively communicate with organizational C‐suite leaders and lead as a strategic partner, as IT continues to move from a department supporting or serving the business to leading change and innovation. Leadership skills include managing project scope, cost, quality, and stakeholders. Students learn the importance of soft skills such as influence, idea sharing and generating, managing conflict, and leading change.

By applying research on leaders in IT and communication techniques, you will be able to develop a vision board that describes the leadership traits of three IT leaders and two communications for senior management that synthesize company data visually.

Competency 1 – You will analyze traits, behaviors, communication tactics, and relationships that leaders possess.

Learning Objective 1 – Analyze leadership traits, behaviors, and communication tactics.

Learning Objective 2 – Communicate project goals to c-suite level.

Competency 1 – Competency Assessment

By analyzing project background information, leadership techniques, and project management processes, you will be able to create a flowchart that describes the processes, roles, and responsibilities of various departments and personnel during each phase of the project and a communication to the c-suite that describes a significant change to the project.

Competency 2 – You will translate the concepts integral to leadership power and influence, and organizational influences.

Learning Objective 3 – Develop a flowchart to explain the project integration plan.

Learning Objective 4 – Communicate project challenges to a team of colleagues.

By applying project management principles and processes, you will be able to create a detailed risk assessment, including a determination of risk level, likelihood of completion, and mitigation strategies, and a project plan that includes documentation of scope, process flowchart, phases, milestones, resource allocation, change management strategies, and risk management strategies.

Competency 3 – You will incorporate foundational processes of scoping projects in project management.

Learning Objective 5 – Analyze the risks associated with the project scope and communicate them to a team of colleagues.

Learning Objective 6 – Propose project scope to stakeholders using Kotter’s model of planned organizational change.
