Research Proposal (32 points)
Instructions - A final 5-10 page research proposal (approximate length; not including title page, references, or appendices) will be due by Saturday, March 15 at midnight on Canvas. It’s been quite a quarter, and if you need an extension, please reach out to Bob at [email protected].
This paper should be written like a research paper and should be in professional style (APA
style, MLA style, or Chicago). Among other things, this means you will have:
● Title page ● Proposal ● Works Cited.
Grading Rubric
Introduction (2 pts.) ● Explain the relevance of the study to a wide audience and has hook the reader
● Provide a roadmap or sense of rest of paper
Literature review (5 pts.) ● At least two quality and relevant empirical articles chosen ○ References should be peer-reviewed journal articles in
most cases. In some cases, quality popular press articles can be used. See instructor.
● Summary is clear and discusses main points, methods (briefly), and take-aways for your study, including how it leads to your research question
● Citations are accurate
Aims & objectives (2 pt.) ● Section named this in the paper ● Clear what the study hopes to learn or do
○ Remember that it’s research for action
Research design and methods (6 pts.)
● The designs should be tied to aims ● Who the participants would be is clear
○ This is where you discuss your community-engaged method and how you will connect/entry to the
community
● Also write about your positionality here and how that would affect the study
● Proposal design is named and makes sense (e.g. PAR,
photovoice, or critical service learning)
Ethical consideration and predication (4 pts.)
● Are there any ethical concerns? ● How will you navigate identities and power? ● How will your research contribute to social justice? ● What do you think might happen in your research?
Quality of writing and professionalism of report (3 pts.)
● Title page ● References ● Accurate citations, clear & organized writing
Critical community-engagement (10 pts.)
● There is (proposed) engagement with a concrete, specific community
● The positionality of the researcher is clear ● The proposal makes clear how the research aims to accompany
the community (acompanamiento) ● There is a strong social justice aim in working with this
community ● Throughout the proposal a sense of social justice values are clear
