Learning Topic

Cloud Migration Strategies When moving to the cloud, companies may start from scratch and develop new IT

applications which will be "born on and for the cloud," to take the greatest advantage of

the cloud capabilities. But most companies start with moving their existing applications

and data to the cloud to ensure uninterrupted operation of their businesses.

The underlying concept of cloud migration is system imaging. A system image is a static

copy of the server's disk storage, containing the operating system software along with

applications and data installed on that server. In addition, the machine image contains the

server configuration information and the image ownership information.

System images allow cloud servers to be reprovisioned, ported, and multiplied. They can

also help migrate applications to the cloud, if the image can be taken at the migration

source, moved to the cloud, and used there. When provisioned in the cloud, the server

can be started to mimic the original source server of the image.

System images can be taken from running servers by a cloud consumer. Also, cloud

providers make images with typical operating systems and applications available for their

customers.

System image formats can vary between cloud providers. Also, application packaging and

configuring methods can be different depending on the operating and application

provider. Migration services provided by cloud providers and third-party companies allow

for transitioning images between formats and moving them to the cloud. All data must be

securely transferred to the cloud, and migration services can help with that.

When designing your cloud migration strategy, consider data security. Is the data

encrypted when in transit and in the cloud? Is the data integrity preserved? How can the

data be accessed securely for maintenance and updates? Cloud providers can answer

these questions.
