Clinical psychologists are trained professionals with the expertise to diagnose, assess, treat and avert the risk of mental illnesses.It is among the largest fieldsin terms of high employment rates as the list of occupations in the field keeps growing (Appleby et al., 2011), as well as an enticing compensation.As far aspsychology is concerned, clinical psychology is listed to have the most psychology subfields, incorporating over 170 occupations.Among the areas where clinical psychologists get employment include; hospitals, mental health facilities, and private practices such as self-employment (Appleby, 2015).Clinical psychologists are best recommended to address issues regarding mental health, however, individuals may opt to specialize and explore deeper into the subareas of clinical psychology such as substance abuse, learning disabilities, health psychology, and emotional problems, among others.

Due to the nature of their job, clinical psychologists must possess several critical skills which include;communication, which enables the medical practitioners to effectively engage with patients and explain research observations and findings with accuracy. The ability to conduct research is inevitable as clinical psychology to gain more critical insights as they assess and evaluate prior research studies, to enhance their knowledge.As with all professions, clinical psychologists should have a strong ethical code andabide by it, for they deal with confidential and sensitive information concerning people, therefore, are required to generate unbiased reports without exposing anyone to harm (American Psychological Association, 2015).For an individual to pursue a career in clinical psychology, they are required to undertake a doctorate in psychology, a successful minimum of 1 to 2 years of professional internship and take and pass an Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology. In the U.S, many states require licensed clinical psychologists to advance their education courses to maintain to avoid license revoke (Walden University, 2016). In some organizations, the demand for certification requires one to have pursued a doctoral degree in psychology, state certification, and a supplementary category of the medical field.
