A Social Work Tool Box . Week 4
If you agree or not, and why?

After reading Chapter Two, The Ecological Perspective I considered the components of the model that would be beneficial to put in practice with my clients. The ecological model stresses the reciprocal interaction that a person has with his or her environment. How a person is able to adapt to his or her environment is a major tenant of the ecological model that influences the life model. While working with clients, it can be easy to take the client out of the context of the environment that he or she is in. For example, a client that has high blood pressure, might be a product of an environment where healthier food options are not made easily available. He or she may live in a neighborhood where a greasy burger and fries are on a dollar menu, while a salad cost twice as much. A client's physical, social and cultural environment can be sources of perpetual stress for a client and finding a way to fit within the environment is a conflict for many.

The skills I would assemble as part of my social work tool box is mostly from the life model which the intention is to improve the "level of fit between" people and their environments by doing direct work with clients to address their environments to learn how to cope and as well to adjust a person's social and environment to be productive for that specific person. The life model has four phases: preparatory, initial, ongoing, and the ending phase. On the other hand, the ecological perspective focuses on: developmental process, a personal repertoire of biological, cognitive, emotional and dispositions and characteristics and its impact on the developmental process, the context for human developments and the multiple dimensions of temporarily that influence change across the life course. I find myself to enjoy the concepts of the life model of people because it is more focused on the person and how they will adjust/ cope to create a better outcome for themselves. As for the ecological perspective it appears to be more complex as the relationships of people and their biological, cognitive, emotional, physical and social environments are being analyzed to fully understand the influence of one another. The mindset I want to assemble as part of my social work tool box is to continually be aware of my values and ethics when working with other clients who may challenge my beliefs. In my tool box I want to consistently accept and respect each client no matter for what race, ethnicity, religion, spiritually, gender, sexual orientation, age and any mental and physical challenges the client may be facing. I do not want for a client to seek for me to help and I only cause damage because I am unable to respect that they are different than myself. I want to respect and understand each client for who they are and who they want to become.
