Creative Writing Story-Environment
Dave Turner is the CEO of one of the major environment-based Non-Governmental Organizations in New York. The organization is involved in advocating for the use of clean energy sources to limit the impact of climate change. It’s activities mainly target multinational companies that are involved in the production of coal, and other unclean sources of energy that have negative impacts on the environment. Together with his wife Lisa and their two children Zara and Dylan, he made a commitment to talk to their friends and family about the realities of climate change and to encourage them to sustainably utilize natural resources.
Recently, Turner organized a conference that invited various environmental activists from all over the world to discuss how they can expand advocacy campaigns against climate change. At the conference, experts indicate that global warming has advanced to a dangerous level and that the planet may soon “fight back” to regain its ecological integrity. These findings trouble Turner and at the end of the conference, he holds a crisis meeting with his team to try and identify remedies to the situation. Unfortunately, the team tells him that humanity’s greed has severely destroyed the earth’s regenerating capacity and the planet must be allowed to fight back so that the next generation can survive. Turner tells them that everyone will be a victim of the impending war between humanity and the earth and thus they should fight climate change together.
Lisa is a professor of environmental law and spends her part time researching on climate change. Her main concern is the melting of ice caps which is also the focus of many environmental scientists all over the world since it leads to rising sea level. As a result of her research work, Lisa realizes that due to the increased warming of the earth, there would be three major sea level rises that would cause permanent inundation of major cities of the world including New York. Lisa shares her research findings with her husband who now agrees that indeed the earth needs to fight back because humanity has taken it for granted. They share their concerns including raising their children and grandchildren in a better environment but worried that the impending crisis may wipe out an entire human generation. They later discuss the issue with their children and Lisa suggests that they should leave New York and go to a safer city until things cool off.
However, Zara and Dylan tell their parents that they cannot leave New York because their friends and family are there and they are not sure which cities will be safe. Turner comes up with an idea to fit buildings with flood-prevention mechanisms and boat storage capacity. He pitches his idea and concerns to his team at the organization and only a few of them agree with it. The rest tell him that he is paranoid and that he should take a break. Jim Anthony, one of his childhood friends calls him aside and tells him that he should see a doctor about his mental health stating that ‘we’ve heard these since the 60s, and nothing happened.” Lisa also shares the concerns with her students and colleagues and gets a similar treatment. Her boss even summons her to the office and warns her against “scaring” the students if she wants to keep her job. Lisa grudgingly obliges to stop her advocacy but tells her boss that climate change is real and that its impacts will shake the foundations of human existence.
When they get back home, Lisa is overcome with emotions and cries on Turner’s shoulders. She tells him that she is disappointed that people are still living in denial despite the glaring negative impacts of climate change. She begins to pace around the room as she recounts major tsunamis, earthquakes, droughts and floods that the world has experienced over the years and how they shook the socio-economic aspects of the world. She tells him about major extinctions of both plants and animals and the massive loss of vegetation cover that has occurred over the years due to the greed of humans to construct cities and buildings. Lisa lists major countries that are involved in industrialization through coal production and how they have prioritized economic development at the expense of the environment. Their son Dylan walks and tells her to come down because people will think that she is crazy. “My friends at school already think my family is crazy, nobody talks to me anymore,” Dylan says walking away. Turner holds him back and tells him that people do not need convincing because soon they will witness the wrath of the planet.
Turner’s words scare his wife and son and as he walks out of the house, Lisa hugs Dylan and tells him to be strong. That evening as the family sat down to watch the nine o’clock news, the reporter interviewed a scientist who spoke on climate change and how its negative effects has advanced to irreparable levels. The scientists called out people for living in denial and told them to make necessary changes before it was too late. As they retire to bed, it starts to drizzle and Zara jokes that the earth has started fighting back and runs to her room. By morning, it is still raining and this time heavier than before making it almost difficult for people to drive to work or for children to go to school. The morning news announces that there is an upcoming hurricane and advises people to stay inside to be safe. Turner tells his family that the day has come and they have to drive to his building for shelter. Dylan and Zara protest but their mother hurry them to prepare and take shelter at the NGO.
As they drive away, the roads are clear and there are trees falling down making it difficult for Turner to drive. However, they ultimately get to the building and hurry to the upper floor of the building in case it floods. While at the top of the building, Turner notices a large volume of water moving into the city and submerging some of the tallest buildings. They can hear people screaming and see some building falling to the ground. They are scared that the building where they are taking shelter may fall but Turner reminds them that he fitted flood-prevention mechanisms and thus they are safe. The family hold each other as the water continues to sweep through the city and by morning, most of the city is permanently under water. The only people who survive are those who live in the upper roofs of some buildings. Although not the whole city is submerged, the main areas holding the nation’s finance and culture are destroyed.
Various cities around the world have also experienced flooding killing many people and destroying property worth millions. Three days later, humanitarian organizations and the nation’s military rush to New York to save the survivors by providing food and evacuating them from the roofs of various buildings. Turner’s friend is part of one of the humanitarian organizations and before the flood, he brushed off Turner’s concerns about climate change. He remembers that Turner was fitting his building with flood-preventions and mechanisms and fuels his private jet in search of his friend. While passing over New York city, he tells his pilot that “climate change is real, the planet is indeed fighting back, we have to find Turner.” Since Turner and his family were at the roof of the building, it was easy to locate them and move them to a safe place.
The humanitarian organizations and the military set up several camps outside New York for victims of the flood. News indicate that the water is not receding and that sharks, fish, floating water plants and other organism that live in water have taken over New York City. Most building have been reduced into rubbles and the once-standing and vibrant city is now a haven of wild water life. In fear of their lives, people begin to vacate other cities to go to the camps because wildlife is taking over. New York has been completely abandoned by human beings to make room for wildlife. At the camp, Turner’s friend asks, “how did you know?” to which Turner replies “I did not, signs have been telling since the 60s.” News outlets refer to him as the modern-day Noah with many people wanting to know more about him. Environment-based organizations all over the world invite him to talk to people about climate change its effects.
Turner and his wife Lisa take up new roles as a climate change activists and they travel the world telling people that the New York flooding was just the tip of the iceberg. As concerns and fear grow among many, they begin to respond positively by eliminating coal production, advocating for green technologies and planting trees. With time, there is a peaceful coexistence between human beings and wildlife and scientists report that the warming of the earth has reduced and that the planet may forgive.
