Classroom Accommodations

Classroom accommodations are made for students who require more help in grasping content in the classroom. Many classrooms and equipment are designed for the common learner who can easily use the information presented in the normal classroom setting. However, some learners cannot process the information in classrooms due to physical anomalies, learning disabilities, and other cognitive problems (2017). Classroom accommodations are put in place to ensure that they learn and process insight in their own way and benefit from the learning system, just like other students.

Some disabilities hinder a learner from learning; such disabilities are known as learning disabilities. One of the learning disabilities is dyslexia. Dyslexia is a condition whereby a learner has difficulty in reading. Conditions such as dyslexia hinder the learner from acquiring information in a learning environment, thus slowing down the learning process. Therefore to give the learner a fair chance at learning with other students, accommodations in the learning environment are devised.

Accommodations are offered to students to allow them to learn at their optimum level. Students with learning disabilities like dyslexia are unable to perform as well as other students due to their inability to use the provided learning material. In many institutions, the learning material used and provided is reading material. Students with dyslexia have difficulty processing information in written form. Assistive technology and devices are therefore introduced to assist the learner to process information. Text to speech technology has been beneficial to learners with dyslexia since speech replaces written content (2020). Being that they have no problem processing audio data, this device helps in their learning process.

Universal Design for Learning is a learning system that ensures all learners' inclusion in the learning process. It recognizes that different students have different ways of processing information, depending on how they are presented (2020). Therefore, it emphasizes varied teaching methods by teachers, varied learning materials and presentation tools, and assistive learning to cater to every learner's learning needs. This has helped learners with dyslexia have a fair chance at learning just by changing the modes of presentation. Instead of reading, they can listen to content, understand it, and process it.
