Heavenly Sea

By: Aimee Bean

The sun sinks low on the horizon of Lanikai. Deep hues of crimson, amethyst, and gold intertwine throughout the heavens. Right below, rolling waves dig their fingers into the powdered, pale sand, leaving behind a trail of silky foam. Opihi shellfish cling tightly to damp rocks, as the water slaps against their shells. Their value is more precious than rubies. Towering palm trees lean lethargically overhead. One could stand right on the shoreline and spot Lanikai’s famous islets, Nā Mokulua. They proudly float side by side like two lush, fraternal twins.

Lanikai beach is situated on the east coast of the island of Oahu. It lies on the edge of the sleepy, little town of Kailua. Social class is considered more rigid here than other neighboring locations. Impressive, opulent homes drape along the coastland. The beach itself is not considered private, yet there is no public parking lots or public facilities. This allows the area to remain serene and somewhat free of wandering tourists.

The first subdivision was established in the 1920’s. Property was once sold for 20 cents per square foot. Before its popularity, Lanikai was previously an unpopular choice for potential purchasers. It lacked natural windbreaks to shelter from them intense, whipping gusts of wind, which can cause the beach to feel quite chilly. Steadily, this wild and untamed territory became a popular destination spot for islander and mainlanders alike. Decades fluttered away before adorable shops and massive beach front estates appeared and prices took a violent incline.

Ancient Hawaiians called this enchanted land Ka'ohao, but it is the contemporary name that truly illustrates this beach’s beauty and magnificence. Lanikai translates into “heavenly sea”. Water so crystal, the natives ascended the peaks between Alala Point and Wailea Point in order to scour the azure surface below, for schools of fish. The families that inhabited this area at least 1,500 years ago, lived and reveled in glorious bliss. When they passed on, it was not in silence. Their legacy is in the form of splendid and colorful legends. Menehune were dwarf or pixie- like tricksters that inhabited the wild. Mo’o was a shapeshifting lizard who could attract sea dwellers.

Many are unaware that it was once the capital of Oahu’s kings. This area saw its most significant event in 1795. King Kamehameha I strategically cemented his claim on Oahu, during the Battle of Nu’uanu. So bloody was his victory, history tells us that his opponents were forced to fall to their deaths on cliffs of Nuʻuanu Pali. His final quest was to unite the Hawaiian people.

Intricately woven, is the history of Lanikai. Its origins are both alluring as they are violent. Beauty and wonder encompass modern dwellers and foreign visitors. Every year, countless people sneak away to experience the beauty of Lanikai firsthand. Its crystal water makes this beach ideal for snorkeling and boogie boarding. The fine, dusty sand is perfect for relaxation and sunbathing. If you are ever fortunate enough to visit one day, I recommend closing your eyes to envision the powerful role it has played in the human journey.
