Class Response 1

Discussion Week #5 Leadership

Transformational leadership is reflected by individuals who acquire strong leadership traits and skills. Leadership skills and behavior are essential to creating prosperity within a team and work environment. In healthcare, nurse leaders must be diligent and savvy when dealing with guidelines for the team to generate positive patient care outcomes. Having a dedicated leader is associated with staff retention, ensuring the nursing unit is efficient and reliable (Robbins & Davidhizar, 2020). The strengths finder assessment is an evaluation tool describing an individual's top qualities. My top five themes include being a learner, discipline, restorative, achiever, and analytical.

I enjoy mental health, and I use my trait of being a learner to further my education. I was raised with discipline and have mastered my time management skills by working full time as a nurse and full-time school. Engaging in the work environment prevents burnout (Shaughnessy et al., 2018). By becoming a PMHNP, I will strengthen my trait of being a learner and discipline skills. I want to diagnose, treat, and explore mental health illnesses. I have utilized valuable information that I have learned when facing critical situations. I have strengthened my ability to use therapeutic communication to de-escalate patients. I am a high achiever and determined to finish my master's program by next year.

I use my characteristic of being an achiever as a nurse during every shift. I strive to provide for the needs of patients and collaborate with the team to enhance the treatment plan for each patient. Interprofessional collaboration demonstrates and significantly impacts healthcare results (Goldsberry, 2018). I want to strengthen my trait of being an achiever with inspiration. I look forward to the future as a PMHNP by helping my patients stabilize and have a better prognosis. Complicated patients and issues prompt me to strengthen my restorative skills by engaging in challenges. At times, I have extracted pertinent information from patients by building rapport. I enjoy coaching my patients and empathizing with them simultaneously. Overall, the strength finder assessment's top five themes describes me as an individual and a healthcare professional. Through these traits and skills, I have been able to prioritize and maintain my goals and values at a young age.

Main Question Post

My five themes were Communication, Responsibility, Harmony, Positivity, and Activator. I am definitely a glass half full, people person. I like to jump in a get things done and I love to sit and have a chat. These things have led me to the field of nursing and are guiding me through this NP journey.

According to George Mason University (2023) there are eight core values of leadership; respect, making a difference, authenticity, integrity, courage, service, humility, and wisdom. I would like to strengthen my skills in humility and wisdom. I am a very self-confident individual, and though this has served me well, being humble is not one of my strong points and I need to work on this. As far as wisdom goes, this program is helping me to partially achieve this goal and helping me to realize all the things that I still need to learn.

The IMD (International Institute for Management Development) (2023) has a list of eight key leadership strengths; Self-awareness, situational awareness, excellent communication skills, effective negotiation skills, conflict resolution skills, collaboration skills and intercultural sensitivity, ability to work with different personal styles and approaches, and being able to make courageous or difficult decisions. I would like to improve my conflict resolution skills. Being able to calmly and effectively resolve conflict is important, and not something I am good at. I would also like to gain better effective negotiation skills, you think I would be better at this as a mother of 6 daughters, but I am not.

Lastly there is a list of ten characteristics of a good leader, put out by the Center for Creative Leadership (2023); integrity, delegation, communication, self-awareness, gratitude, learning agility, influence, empathy, courage, and respect. Improving my level of gratitude and increasing the times I show gratitude to others is something I would like to do. A simple thank you goes a long way, and I know I don’t say it enough. I would also like to improve my learning agility, my natural reaction time to life situations. This is so important in nursing and something we all need to constantly improve.
