A theoretical orientation is a concept in which anthropologists use to explain phenomena. Our textbook provides specific explanations of how theoretical orientations can be tested, although they can never be scientifically proven to be true. Ember provides a number of important theories, and discusses how they can be applied to Abeam culture. One of the theories that stood out to me the most is cultural ecology, as I believe that it explains the cycle of warfare, ritual and yam growing among the Abelam culture. In our textbook, Scallion discusses how yam exchanges can be used as a way to cope with social conflicts. Yams would be provided to their enemies, and these enemies would try to return a yam that was better. This would enable the Ableams to avoid physical altercations by resolving their conflict through the exchange of yams.

In Ember and Ember, there are a number of interesting theories that are presented and discussed. One that I found to be particularly interesting is cultural ecology, which refers to the way that people are able to adapt to their environment. According to Ember and Ember, cultural ecology suggests that people need to change their behaviors in order to increase their survival rates. Our textbook discusses how people go through social interactions with one another in an environmental setting in order to achieve this feat. A typical cultural ecologist performs the role of studying people that live in a particular ecosystem, and suggests ways that their behaviors can be changed. There are a lot of interesting concepts discussed in cultural ecology, and it can be applied to our lives in order to gain a better understanding of human behavior.
