Derek Pieper Good Afternoon, From the list of bulleted points, the leadership definitions that have influenced my work the greatest are: “Directing and coordinating the work of group members, the process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing it goals, and the ability to engage employees, the ability to build teams, and the ability to achieve results” (Hughes, R., 2018). In order for me to be successful as a restaurant manager, I have to be able to put together a high-performing team that can perform to the standards of our company, but who can also co-exist with each other and work as a team to get the best desired result while being highly productive. These three points are pretty much how I strive to be the best leader I can be for my team. In regard to leadership being an art and a science I believe that it is both. Every manager leads their teams differently. The art is in how you lead them. It differs from team to team, environment, people being led, etc. The science is in the research given to the topic and the managers that utilize leadership teachings typical make some of the best leaders. My favorite leader is Howard Schultz because of how people-first he was when he was leading the major growth of Starbucks from a small startup coffee shop to a global leader in the industry. His approach even as the CEO of one of the biggest corporations in the world is one of humility and understanding that the people in his stores are his biggest performers. Romans 12:3 states, “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you; Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith of God has distributed to each of you” (biblegateway.com, n.d.). The verse goes on to talk about forming teams as one, this is how I see myself as a leader. I am the result of my guidance and principles of how I lead my team. If I give them the knowledge and tools to succeed in their positions they will do so. If I do not give them that know-how and hold them accountable, then they will fail. That is a reflection of me as a manager and how I guide my team to be successful. References Hughes, R. (2018). Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience. [Textbook Butler]. The process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals (Hughes, R., 2018). The ability to engage employees, the ability to build teams, and the ability to achieve results (Hughes, R., 2018). In my job, I lead a large team of multiple different types of healthcare professionals. In order for them to do their work effectively, I have to understand the nuances between each type of professional and coordinate their efforts accordingly in order to accomplish goals and key results. In It is my opinion that leadership is both an art and a science. Being an effective leader requires attention to detail, structure, processes, etc. but also requires creativity, flexibility, and open-mindedness. In order to improve in both the art and science aspects of leadership, one must gain both education and experience. Learning the different leadership types and strategies from books, classes, seminars, etc. will help with the science aspect, while practical experience and putting those strategies into play in real-life scenarios will teach the art of leadership. Romans 12:16 says, “Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.” This verse is extremely important for leadership as it is how Jesus led. He was always found with the people that others wanted nothing to do with. A good leader is not a “boss” but in my opinion should work for his/her people, supporting them in their work and lives. References Hughes, R. (2018). Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience.
