PEER REVIEW ESSAY ( SUMMARY PARAGRAPH AND RESPONSE PARAGRAPH

“Class in the Classroom”: Summary and Response

1) Read the article “Class in the Classroom” by Joshua Halberstam—link provided in eCampus.

2) Write a response essay to the above reading.

3) Partner up with a classmate and complete a peer-review.

4) Submit the peer-review result to the appropriate link.

The Summary:

· Refer to the “Guidelines for Summary Writing” in unit 1.

· Write the summary in your own words, remembering to be aware of your bias, giving the argument its own space to breathe, while still shaping it so that you can easily respond to the parts that were most interesting to you.

· Do not use quotes.

The Reaction:

· The response section of your essay is the place for opinion and can take many forms: agreeing, disagreeing or a bit of both.

Peer-Review:

· Peer reviewing another person’s paper might make you feel a bit uncomfortable. However, the more you can tell this person to help him or her improve the essay, the better his or her grade could be. We want to be constructive, but it’s better to score a little lower than just give out high scores and give someone a false sense of security about his or her paper. And when you give feedback, remember to be specific. If you just write, “Well, I think this is ok, but could be better” the writer has no idea what needs work. However, if you write, “I feel like the writer doesn’t give a complete picture of the article because she leaves out this major point.”

· When you receive your own review, please understand that the reader’s comments are only intended to help you grow and are not personal in any way. It can be tough to take criticism, but being able to hear feedback on your work is a great skill to hone.
