Classic Literature

For the purposes of our class, you may consider each of the works listed below to be a classic, or you may petition the instructor in advance (before writing about it) to recognize another work. Note: Some authors’ are listed by their pseudonym (“pen name”) if the majority of their works were published under that name.

Although all of the works below have received critical acclaim for excellence and stood the test of time (i.e., are classics), they were not all written for the same audience. Some are classics in children’s literature, some are classics written for young adults (teens), and some have such depth that only adults are likely to understand them. In writing about children’s or young adult literature you should show an awareness of the audience for which the work was written and not “stretch” the meaning in a dubious direction, i.e., Dr. Seuss’ “How the Grinch stole Christmas” is a children’s story, not a metaphor for American politics.

The notations “Collected Short Stories of” or “Collected Poetry of” do not refer to an actual volume of that name, but rather to the idea that many published short stories and/ or poems by this author can be recognized as classics. Remember that a short story or a poem, although smaller than a novel, is viewed as a complete work of literature and should be analyzed as such.
