Classic Movies

One of the class requirements for an aesthetic Background sub-section is that you discuss “classic” works of art or literature (e.g., The movies listed below have been judged by the American Film Institute as being in the “Top 100” movies of all time (2007).

Note that the six movies listed below are NOT to be used – although they are classics – either because we will discuss them in class or they have been overused in past papers.

Saving Private Ryan 1998 (#71 in Top 100)

In addition to those movies listed above, there are also movies listed below that are listed within the top five of the AFI’s “Best of Genre.” Some of these “Best of Genre” movies are also listed in the “Top 100,” but those that are not may also be considered classics within the genre. An aesthetic analysis of these movies would include discussion as to why they are considered leaders in the genre.

** NOTE: There are other genres recognized by the AFI – such as Musicals and Epics – but all of the top five movies recognized by the AFI within those genres are also within the overall “Top 100.”
