MGMT 542 Assignments 5 and 6
Case analysis
Develop argument
Present argument (in class and on paper)
Team Process
Individual work
Record each person’s perspective
Consider and discuss perspectives
Arrive at claim everyone can agree on
Allows each person to develop best ideas
Allows each person’s ideas to be heard
Allows team to incorporate all members’ thinking
Allows team to present unified perspective
Step 1: Develop your own position
On your own, make notes on what you think about these questions:
How has Root Capital best helped its clients?
What evidence in the case illustrates these successes?
— What does it need to do to be more successful?
How do you know this would work?
Record each team member’s perspectives on the flip chart. Bullet points are ok.
Make note of:
How has it helped?
What areas could be more successful?
Do not evaluate perspectives at this point. Your goal is just to record them on the chart.
Step 2: Uncover your team’s positions
Now, imagine that Root Capital is going to make significant investment in the area you recommend, as long as it helps them get to their goal of making themselves obsolete
As a team, decide on a perspective you can all agree on, to answer this question:
What one area should Root Capital invest in, to get it closer to its goal?
Ways to evaluate:
Can we make a clear claim about this perspective? ✓
Do we have sufficient evidence to support our claim for this perspective? ✓
Can we make (and refute) a counter-claim? ✓
✓✓✓ Yes? This is your perspective.
Step 3 Decide on your team’s position
MGMT 542 Assignments 5 and 6
Case analysis
Develop argument
Present argument (in class and on paper)
Build a presentation (Assignment 5)
Time limit: 5-7 minutes
Explain context and present a position on your topic
Support it using evidence from the assigned case study
Your argument will also include:
at least one alternative perspective
an analysis of the weaknesses of that perspective (rebuttal)
a conclusion that asserts the strength of your position.
Basic skills to demonstrate
33
Brief summary of the case
Paraphrase of evidence
Team work
Argument, counter, rebuttal, reassertion
What is the problem/situation described?
What should Root Capital focus on to get it to its goal?
What would be another way of doing so? What weakness can you see?
What makes your recommendation the best strategy?
Include evidence from the case only. No external research is required.
Each member of the team contributes to ideas
Each member presents part of the presentation
Build a paper (Assignment 6)
Word count: 800 - 900 words
Explain the context and your position, supported with evidence from the assigned case study
Your argument will include:
- Sufficient evidence to support your assertions
at least one alternative perspective
an analysis of the weaknesses of that perspective
a conclusion that asserts the strength of your perspective.
• Apply feedback presented by the class and instructor.
As a team:
Identify evidence to support the claim you have developed.
Consider a counter-claim as well (what is another way they could have prepared?) and a rebuttal (what are the drawbacks of that alternative?)
What evidence best supports these claims?
35
Consider:
How will the presentation for this class allow you to practice for other presentations?
What skills do you hope to develop as a result?
How will you adapt based on feedback?
Discuss with your team
What is our initial research question?
What?
How?
Why?
How can we divide our efforts to complete our work?
What do we need to know?
How can we avoid overlapping our efforts?
Assign roles or tasks
Use team forum in Moodle to discuss/share
How will we talk about it?
How can we keep organized?
Team plan
With your team, continue filling out your team planning process document, based on what you now know.
