ADDRESSING DIVERSITY 2

Diversity allows for differences among individuals to coexist in the world. It explains the

difference among individuals and allows for people’s culture, race, ethnicity, religion, and so

much more to be identified. “Diversity is any factor that distinguishes one individual from

another, that is, any factor by which two or more individuals are dissimilar” (Inegbedion et. al,

2020, p.2). Each individual has their own background that makes them diverse and unique. As

educators, it is important to understand diversity amongst the students and to be open to

accepting students from all backgrounds.

Part 1: Diversity Self-Knowledge

I personally do not consider myself very diverse, especially compared to others that I

know. However, here are some things that I have thought about:

1. The first school I taught at was on the Navajo Reservation in St. Michaels, AZ.

Experience working and living on a reservation for 3 years impacted my mindset on

diversity.

2. For the past 5 years, I have been teaching an ELL Foundations of Algebra class. I had

taken Spanish classes growing up, but I had not used it in many years. I am currently

at a spot where I can teach my students the math topics in Spanish.

3. I have ADHD and high functioning anxiety. Both of these contribute to my

organizational skills and how I react to situations.

4. I am the youngest child in my family, as well as the youngest cousin on both sides of

my family. This has always caused me to be treated like I am younger than I actually

am.

ADDRESSING DIVERSITY 3

5. I have traveled to several countries. My Italian teacher in high school brought several

of us on a trip to Italy and Switzerland, where we were challenged to use the Italian

language that we had previously learned. In college I traveled to Ireland, England,

France, and Wales. We were given tours of different historical places. With my family

I have traveled to Mexico, where we took a tour of some Mayan ruins.

6. I come from a family where majority of us are left-brained. We strive on subjects

such as math, but we struggle with creativity.

7. At the college that I went to, a majority of the individuals who lived on campus were

of African American or Hispanic descent. I was of the minority in the dorms.

8. I was always on the younger side of students in my grade. This meant that I got my

license after all of my friends, and I was the last one able to go out with friends.

9. I am an athlete. I love softball and I played it my whole life. I currently coach the

high school softball team, and I play on two adult teams. I also played soccer and

basketball growing up.

10. I grew up in the Roman Catholic religion. I have recently found myself straying from

the religion, as I do not agree with some of their beliefs.

11. In college I participated in many clubs. The most diverse ones that I was a part of

were the Black Student Union and the Latin American Student Organization.

My diverse characteristics have molded me into the woman that I am today. I am unique

because of my life experiences that have been able to shift my mindset and let me form myself as

an individual. My work on the Navajo Reservation truly shaped me into a more diverse person

and made me more aware of others differences. This influences me as an educator because I am

able to share my past experiences with students and open their eyes to things outside of their

community. I also feel that the students know that I am accepting and will come to me about

issues that are facing in life or with diversity. I also am able to relate real life examples to my

teaching. “Learning is more meaningful and enjoyable when content and process are learned

within the context of a real and present problem” (Allen et. al, 2016, p.89).

Part 2: Personal SWOT Analysis

Strengths

1. I have worked on the Navajo Reservation, and now work in a diverse school in NJ. I have taught a big number of very diverse students.

2. I am open to learning about student’s differences and I love to incorporate their differences into my classroom.

3. I can speak enough Spanish to teach my students in Spanish.

4. I have taught a wide range of classes from resource room to honors levels.

Weaknesses

1. I do not speak enough Spanish to have full conversations with parents.

2. I grew up in a middle-class family and never had to worry about being able to afford daily necessities.

3. I doubt myself and worry that I am not the best teacher and most supportive teacher for my students.

Opportunities

1. Being the only teacher who teaches resource Algebra II and ELL Foundations of Algebra in my school, I have to ability to spend more time focusing on students and integrating their culture into my lessons.

2. I have the opportunity to differentiate in my classroom.

3. I am able to learn about other cultures from my students.

Threats

1. I am a white female, so my culture is not diverse. I can have difficulty relating to my student’s experiences.

2. I teach students with behavioral issues, so being a female can be difficult at time if a student does not respect me. However, I have been very lucky with this!

3. When having an administration walk through my classroom while I am not “teaching math” but instead getting to learn about my students, can cause for

a “bad” observation.

Part 3: Demographic Diversity Portrait

Total Student Population 1,195

Gender: Male: 47% Female: 53%

Race/Ethnicity: African American: 6% Hispanic: 34% White: 57% Asian: 2% Two or more Races: 1%

Socioeconomic Status: Free/Reduced Lunch: 29%

Home Language: English: 70.8% Spanish: 28.8% Other: 0.4%

“As diversity of race and ethnicity is being reconfigured in our country, public schools

are still faced with the continuous challenge for their students to be proficient in curriculum

content areas, demonstrate this proficiency on standardized tests, be career or college ready, and

be competitive in the global education system” (Deprez, 2018, p.1). The constant changes in

diversity in schools impacts the teaching at all schools, mine included. Red Bank Regional is

diverse in race, socioeconomic status, languages spoken at home, student’s ability levels, and

different home environments. This impacts teaching because you cannot handle two different

students the same way. With one student I may be able to give them less instruction, have them

try problems on their own, and they can figure things out. However, with another student, they

may not have learned how to figure things out on their own, and they may need a gentler

approach to teaching them. I try to create groups in my classroom that include students will

diversity, instead of keeping “like” individuals together. I am constantly adjusting to the different

students I have in my classroom each year, and sometimes each month, as many new ELL

students come to my school throughout the year.

Red Bank Regional incorporates Universal Design for Learning by encouraging the staff

members to practice mindfulness in the classroom and make sure that all students are heard. We

are also encouraged to let students have some say in what type of assessments they would like to

see used in their classes. UDL is also used by teaching the same class in different ways. Some

days I may use direct instruction, while other days I may use discovery. Using different teaching

strategies is useful because not all students learn the same way.

Throughout our life, we will face diversity on a daily basis. All individuals should be

taught to embrace diversity and take advantage of the beauty in it. We can all learn from each

other, and we should not be closed off to the differences among each other. Students should feel

supported in the classroom, while also feeling safe with others who are not like them. Diversity

has always been something that I embrace, and I hope to spread that outlook to my students.
