(extent of impact)

From the beginning of the war, Lincoln wanted peace and unison from both sides, as the war progressed Lincoln had the emancipation proclamation put in place which caused more tension between the 2 sides.

Evidence #1: Initially Lincoln believed/urged/promoted peace, as seen in his First inaugural speech. This shows that at first Lincoln didn’t want any outbreak or fights between the 2 unions. He just wanted unison between both.

Evidence #2: Later, Lincoln proposes the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction, as seen in his speeches he made. This shows he planned for a reunion with the south. Also he did this to reduce hostility in the war. Basically, he was trying to use the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction as a way to get the Confederate states back into the union and end the war.

Evidence #3: Finally, Lincoln proclaims/commands/the U.S. Union Army, as seen in his signs of a brief document officially promoting then-Major General Ulysses S. Grant to the rank of lieutenant general of the U.S. Army, tasking the future president with the job of leading all Union troops against the Confederate Army. This shows Lincoln preferred to promote then-Commanding General Henry Halleck to lead the Union Army, which had been plagued by a string of ineffective leaders and terrible losses in battle.
