Item # 11 – Attend a protest, rally, or demonstration

Last year, the Sociology Club invented what they called the “Sexual Assault Awareness March.” During this 2019-2020 school year, a dedicated Honor’s College student continued the tradition. You can find several of my students in the image above. Professor Respass can just barely be seen near the sculpture of the bear. She is rallying the troops prior to the March. I helped pass out informational flyers to attendees, actively listened to the two speakers at the rally, handed out signs that students had made the previous day, and marched with this mob of students around the late at North campus twice. We definitely made some good noise. I was disappointed to see that despite several faculty and administrators in attendance during the speakers, I was one of the few non-students that joined them in the actual. It is possible that these faculty and administrators were too busy to join the march or that they saw the march itself as a thing just for the students. I joined them. I think Sexual assault awareness is an important cause to support because sexual assault itself is so omnipresent in our society, yet too often swept under the rug. Sexual violence is preventable. Despite this fact, the CDC still reports that more than 1 in 3

women and nearly 1 in 4 men have experienced sexual violence at some point in life (https://www.cdc.gov/injury/features/sexual-violence/index.html). These are staggering statistics.

Here is a receipt from when I renewed my membership to the Frost Museum of Science. It is dated 6.2.19. I renewed my membership at the museum, and subsequently viewed

many exhibits including the new “The Secret World Inside You” exhibition.

I am a card-carrying member of the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. I typically visit

Vizcaya several times a year. The most recent visit was in November 2019. The

museum and gardens are not necessarily important just because they were built by

millionaire James Deering. The mansion itself displays many important

accomplishments in architecture. The museum is home to artwork from all over the

globe and includes more than just paintings and sculptures. It includes objects across

history from all over the world – furniture, instruments, and various other artifacts.

Currently, Vizcaya has recovered artworks that were lost – or stolen – during the Nazi

occupation of several European nations. Of course, some of these objects were

returned to their rightful owners after WWII, be they galleries or private collectors.

However, many found their way into black markets. Vizcaya received a donation of

more than 30 works of art in the 1980’s from a prominent Miami Beach art collector that

had purchased these works of art in Europe in the 1950’s. And, yes, you guessed it,

many of these pieces had been previously stolen by Nazis from the National Museum in

Warsaw.
