Citizens for a Better South Florida Inc, a local non-profit based in Miami-Dade

county, Florida, is committed to providing environmental education,

particularly to the underserved community. The organization is dedicated to

inspiring active stewardship and the preservation of the South Florida

environment. Founded in 1988 by Arsenio Milian, a Cuban born environmental-

civil engineer, the organization is driven by the belief that grassroots,

community-based education is critical to maintaining South Florida’s native

ecosystems and the quality of life for its citizens.

The non-profit has pioneered several initiatives and programs aimed at

environmental preservation. Their Urban Greening & Community Forestry

program educates adults and children on the importance of trees, fostering a

sense of community through large-scale service-learning events such as tree

planting. Their Habitat Restoration & Ecosystem Stewardship program focuses

on the removal of exotic and invasive plants to restore natural areas and native

habitats. They also have a School & University Greening and Outreach

Program, providing education opportunities in urban forestry, water

conservation, and general environmental issues in both English and Spanish.

Citizens for a Better South Florida Inc also collaborates with local community

leaders, government, and non-government agencies, to educate them on

pertinent environmental issues and their respective solutions or mitigation

techniques. The organization is a leader in the Environmental Educator

Providers Association of Miami-Dade County and continues to work closely

with The South Florida Water Management District, Waste Management,

Dade-County DERM, and other county and city governmental and non-

governmental agencies.

Through these initiatives, Citizens for a Better South Florida Inc strives to

improve the quality of life for its citizens by preserving the environment and

promoting active stewardship.
