Citing a Canter/Laureate Video in APA Style

1. Students should do their best to be accurate, citing the information that appears on the DVD or video, which, presumably, reflects the copyright and production information on the material itself.

2. The in-text citation must match the author slot in the reference list. If the directors are listed—Canter and Winberry in the following example—they get the in-text citation, not the person being interviewed. Students are encouraged to write something like this:

In a taped interview (Canter & Winberry, 2001), Maxwell Stoli, the renowned professor of potables at the School of Hard Knocks in Dallas, TX, remarked that yadda yadda yadda.

3. Before formatting references for your video/DVD, you will need to review the credits to find the Director(s) and Producer for your video series.

According to this information and the APA Manual (p. 210) (television single episode in a series), the reference list format for video or DVD would be as follows:

Name. (Director or Writer or both). (date). Program number: Name of program [Motion picture]. In Name (Producer), Name of video in italics. Location: Publisher.

In-Text Citation

Note 1. When citing a speaker in a video or DVD, the speaker's name is NOT placed in the citation. Therefore the speaker's name MUST be used in the text of the writing with the citation for the video program directly following the name.

Note 2. In APA, direct quotes MUST have page numbers. Paraphrasing does not required page numbers in APA. Since obviously a video/DVD program does not have page numbers, speakers cannot be quoted directly. Use paraphrasing when referring to speakers in video/DVD programs.

Using Two or More Sources with Same Author Date

In the parentheses, following the year, add "a," "b," and so on. Use these letters when giving the year in the in-text citation AND in the corresponding reference list.
