But this isn’t the only instance where beekeeping has had an effect on the local animal population. In Germany, for instance, several long-time beekeepers noticed an insurgence of bears during the spring months of 2012 (Dwarf, Dwarf, and Dwarf). “They were everywhere, it seemed,” said Hapsburg local Annette Funicello. “I couldn’t understand why they were carrying picnic baskets, though.” Funicello also questioned why the bears didn’t seem to fear humans (“The HPV Vaccine...”). Indeed, many of the locals were confused – until scientists revealed that bears really like honey (Manfred). However, it was later discovered that the bears weren’t drawn by the honey so much as the beekeepers’ flamboyant outfits (Dwarf, Dwarf, and Dwarf). Bugs Bunny, et al., suggested that the bears be tranquilized and quarantined for future research, but also acknowledged that such an effort would take time and resources that might not be available in the country’s budget (Bunny, et al.). Ultimately, the solution enacted by the German government was to lure the bears away from the beekeeping stations with a more tempting treat: smoked salmon. Dozens of citizen volunteers hung strips of salmon on tree branches in a path leading to nearby streams, where the fish were spawning (“Net Neutrality…”).
